Voters killed the $3.5 million levy proposal beyond the six per cent limitation on property tax increases last week. The Budget Committee voted to try again with a $2.2 million levy Sept. 16. The county has the power to raise property taxes up to six per cent each year without voter approval. But what specifically will they cut? Nobody is sure. “When you talk to people," says Frank Elliott, chairer of the board of county commissioners, “and ask where to cut they can’t tell you, and that's what hurts." The proposed levy was reduced by rearranging the use of about $1 million in revenue items, and by cutting about $200,000 in programs. The group will meet again at 3 p.m. Thursday to review the specific cuts. County commissioners had originally said that parks and health services in the county would suffer the most from a budget failure at the polls. Officials from these agencies were unavailable for comment. Library times change soon Today is the last day of the main library’s regular summer hours.
