You ain't goin' nowhere Photo by Geoff Parki The Oregon quarterback riddle: Who's on first? By DAVEBUSHNELL Of the Emerald WANTED: one football player. POSITION: quarterback. SKILLS NEEDED: ability to run, pass and think under pressure. "What we want," declares head football coach Don Read, "is to have one quarterback. We feel that this will allow the offense to function as a unit," and hopefu>y they will improve their con sistency over last year's per formances. "As of right now Herb Singleton is our number one quarterback. He will start this Saturday, providing his hip is O.K." Singleton suffered a hip-pointer last Saturday in a scrimmage but should be ready for the Varsity Alumni game. Offensive coordinator Joe Wade adds that "our players are ad justing well to the offense." Wade continued, "Quarterback Norval Turner has had some experience with the running type of offense. Two years ago they ran the half wish-bone offense." "Singleton's thing is passing," Read said, "but he has lost some weight and is making some better decisions out on the field. He is also running flatter, not great but adequate." The third quarterback, being watched closely by the coaching staff is Ken Spencer. "If you talk about pure execution then Spencer is doing the best job," Softba/lers set finale By WEND Y POLHEMUS Of the Emerald The women's A softball team ends its season today with a double- header against Oregon State and the Eugene Kay-Jays. Action starts at 3:30 p.m. at Amazon Park. The A's have had a disap pointing season, at times playing up to their potential as highly skilled players, but falling apart at critical points. This inconsistancy accounts for their 3-8 win-loss record. The team will try and salvage what's left of the season this afternoon as they have split their two previous games with rival OSU and this game deter mines the best out of three games. The highly spirited B team ended their season Tuesday without a win. The 16-9 loss to Portland State ended a season which was full of potential that was never developed. The reason is simple. Inadequate funding of women's sports made it impossible to have any more than one coach for both A and B teams. The individual attention needed for each player was not available because of this. Both teems played at the same time so when the coach was with the A team the B team coached themselves and vice versa. An unfortunate circumstance that reflects in the teams' records. Generally, batting was not the problem area for the B's as five of the starting players hit over .300 led by Beth VanLoo with .390. Terry Souers led in triples with three while Chris Hogan and Jackie Lehman tied for doubles with three apiece. The only home run of the B season was hit by A and B team substitute Nancy Sitz. claims Wade, "but his inex perience will be a factor we must consider." Spencer is only a freshman now • The coaches seem to be on the right track so far this spring. As everyone learned last year, it is very difficult to win on the two quarterback system, and Read is trying to do something about this problem. By next September, Singleton may not be number one, but no matter who it is he will be so by himself and will not have to share the top spot with anyone. The change to the veer was made for several reasons, most notably to fit the system to the personnel available. With the departure of Tim Guy, LeFrancis Arnold and Mike Bollinger, the Ducks have had to change from a "muscle offense" to a system that revolves around the offensive line and the ability of the quarterback to make the correct option decision. "Our attitude has been par ticularly impressive during spring drills," Read remarked. "No matter how talented an individual you are, unless you have the proper attitude you just can not go anywhere." According to Read the key to the implementation of the veer is that it is an offense that is centered around sound mental and physical discipline. This is essential because the whole offense is built around the "right read" of how the defense will react against you. "Our offensive performance and execution has not been like we want, but the structure is there along with all the ingredients necessary to have an improved football team next season," Read admitted. dcmocrat FOR MPMSCNTAT1VC DISTRICT 41 - not just for students - not just for women - not just for environmentalists Mary Milhaupt cares about all of the people in District 41 - and in Oregon.
