Ron Schmidt, said Wednesday that the Governor had made no decision on the matter Schmidt said, The Gov ernor strongly supports athletics, including women's sports ’’ Women’s sports may receive more support if a proposal for taxpayer support of the athletic departments is adopted. “Although the merging law is extremely cloudy...any State funds appropriated for men’s intercollegiate athletics must be matched by funds made available to women students, either to the level of their interest and participation, or if that in terest is high enough, to the amount or proportion made available to the men," Clark said in his memorandum The state currently pays for 1.5 teaching positions for women’s sports. Ritchey explained why the proposals are being made. “Cause we're going broke." He said the athletic facilities such as Autzen Stadium and Hayward Field, built and maintained by the AD. are used extensively by the PE departments. “It’s unfair for the AD to have to bear that burden,’’ he said. The University AD currently spends more than $380,000 in salaries for 31 coaches. Under the proposal, all football and basketball coaches, would not receive salary’ funding from the state. OSU spends approximately $320,000 on coaches. PSU spends more than $80,000.
