More are concerned about the great injustices that have been inflicted upon the poor by those who possess wealth and power to an excessive degree Others look to learn from peoples who have grown up with a different mentality than that which is theirs. All feel that the only solution to the crises that threaten to split men asunder is the love of God as shown in the life of His Son, Jesus Christ. There are nine positions open and filing starts today. Applications for candidacy can be picked up beginning at 9 a m. at 315 EMU. Filing deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday. There will also be a mandatory meeting for OSPIRG candidates on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The room will be posted in the EMU. The dates of the ASUO special election are next Monday and Tuesday. The polls will be open from 9a.m. to6p.m. on both days of the election. Air society seeks toys for tots The Arnold Air Society, a service organization of Air Force ROTC cadets at the University, is conducting a “toys for tots” drive in the Eugene-Springfield area. Donations of new, used, and repairable toys are needed. After collection the toys will be repaired and turned over to Sacred Heart Hospital and the Marines’ toys for tots drive for distribution. Donations may be left in collection boxes at the following locations: Newman Center, Oakway Mall, Big M Shopping Center, Springfield. Payless, Willamette Plaza, Bi-Mart, K-Mart 2000 Goodpasture Island Rd. and Steve’s Edgewood Pharmacy, 40th Ave. and Donald St. Deadline for collection is Friday, December 7. Cinde Gambil at 746-7728 or Tom Prior at 344-1250 Gay rights ordinance vote set The City Council will vote Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. on an ordinance that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the areas of employment, public accommodations and housing The meeting had previously been scheduled for Monday night. “We’d really like sympathetic people to come and show their support for the bill,” said Randy Shifts, gay activist and IFC chairer “This bill has caused more mail than any other City Council issue in the history of Eugene. The mail generally asserts that Eugene will be Sodom & Gomorah revisited if the bill gets passed All we want is the freedom that other Americans have: To be able to work and to live our own lives.” Shilts said Because of the rescheduling, the GPA pot luck originally scheduled for 8 p.m. will tentatively be after the hearing at 1236 Kincaid, Shilts said New head librarian to speak H William Axford, new University of Oregon Librarian, will be the speaker at the Friends of the Library Fall Term program meeting Wednesday Axford will speak on “A Look at the Future,” a description of new and anticipated services planned to make the University Library more useful to the users. The program will be in the Browsing Room of the Erb Memorial Union at 8 p.m and is open to the public at no charge. Plans are currently being made for a Winter Term program featuring a well-known Oregonian in the international book trade Zen advocate presents lecture Rev Shuyu Singer, prior of Eugene Soto Zen Priory, will present a public lecture on ‘‘Psychology of Zazen” at 7:30 p.m. in room 238 Commonwealth, Tuesday. Make your own Christmas cards: EMU Now you can make your own Christmas cards. The EMU Craft Center will be holding an instructional workshop in silk screening Christmas cards. It will meet three times: Nov. 29, Dec. 4 and Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. in room 14 of the EMU. There will be a $2 fee which will in clude all materials except for card stock. Registration is in Room 301, EMU. The workshop is limited to 12 persons. ( COMMUNITY j Growth limits, environment discussed tonight A group of persons interested in preserving the quality of life in the Eugene-Springfield area meets today at 7:30 p.m. in the Harris Hall basement. A ballot measure to limit and control growth in the area will be discussed. Lane mental health group seeks members A Lane County citizens advisory committee which concerns itself with mental health matters is seeking additional members. Recently the county’s Mental Health Clinic advisory board recommended to the Board of Commissioners that the committee be expanded to allow for broader representation. The committee advises the county’s mental health clinic which provides evaluation, treatment and referral services to emotionally disturbed people. Special areas of concern are outpatient treatment for alcoholics; adult and children’s mental health services and ex hospital patient services. Through contractual arrangements, services are provided in the areas of drug abuse, mental health planning and education, mental retardation and alcohol rehabilitation. Individuals from throughout the county who are interested in being named to the committee should write the County Commissioners at the courthouse in Eugene
