Los Angeles wins NBA tilt Gail Goodrich sank eight of his 30 points in the final five minutes and Happy Hairston added six during that span as the Los Angeles Lakers battled from four points behind to nip the Cleveland Cavaliers 102-100 Sunday night. Goodrich’s two free-throws with nine seconds left proved to be the deciding points. Los Angeles overcame an 89-85 deficit with Hairston and Goodrich scoring 14 of the last 17 Laker points. The Western Division front runners took the lead for good at 90-89 on Connie Hawkins' slam dunk with 3:59 to go. Hairston followed with two free throws and a layup for a five-point lead but Cleveland’s Austin Carr kept his team in contention with the final seven Cav points. Bob McAdoo staked the Braves to an early lead and his 43-point performance sealed the victory as Buffalo rolled over the Capital Bullets 112-101. Chet Walker led the Bulls with 28 points while Jerry Sloan had 24 and Bob Love finished with 21. Norm Van Lier popped in a 20 foot jump shot with three seconds left to give the Chicago Bulls a 104-102 victory over Detroit. Van Lier’s basket came after Detroit center Bob Lanier tied the game for the 10th time in the quarter, 102-102. The Bulls took the ball out of bounds with 23 seconds left and worked it to Van Lier for the winning shot. Seals shut out Sabres BUFFALO, N Y. (UPI) — Young Goaltender Gilles Meloche stopped 27 Buffalo shots Sunday night as the California Golden Seals beat the Sabres, 2-0, in an NHL game. It was the first shutout of the season for the 23-year old Meloche who had a 4.02 goals against average in 13 games with the Seals before Sunday night’s contest. He stopped six shots in the first period, 10 in the second and 11 in the third. After weeks of dull, one-sided routs, eight of the teams ranked in the top ten are going to collide head-on in Thanksgiving weekend showdowns. Six of the teams ranked in the top ten are still unbeaten and untied and a seventh club has only a tie to mar its record. But that’ll change this weekend when second-ranked Alabama meets seventh-ranked LSU on Thanksgiving Day, third-ranked Oklahoma meets 10th ranked Nebraska on Friday and top ranked Ohio State faces fourth raepromptatt having a Happy Bird Day Special. All four games will be nationally televised and a college football addict couldn’t ask for much more. The Ohio State-Michigan and UCLA-USC battles will decide the Rose Bowl pairings and Ohio State can clinch the UPI national title with a triumph over Michigan. The matchups for other major bowls were officially announced Saturday. Of course, it was a foregone conclusion but it wasn’t until Saturday that it became official that it’ll be Notre Dame vs. Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, Penn State vs. LSU in the Orange Bowl and Nebraska vs. Texas in the Cotton Bowl. The Thanksgiving Day weekend glitter will make up for what has been a rather ho-hum season. Except for the Oklahoma-USC tie, Notre Dame’s victory over USC and Nebraska’s win over UCLA, the teams in the top ten haven’t been involved in many climactic games this season. Most of their games have been routine wins. Nebraska’s loss to Missouri and its tie with Oklahoma State have been the only real upsets involving teams in the top ten. It was a typical day Saturday as nine of the teams in the top ten were victorious and the 10th, fifth-ranked Notre Dame, was idle. Ohio State whipped Iowa 55-13, Alabama trounced Miami, Fla. 43-13, third-ranked Oklahoma, which can’t accept a bowl bid because it is under suspension for recruiting violations, beat Kansas 48-20, fourth-ranked Michigan downed Purdue 34-9, sixth-ranked Penn State beat Ohio University 49-10, seventh ranked LSU downed Mississippi State 26-7, eighth-ranked UCLA beat Oregon State 56-10, ninth ranked USC beat Washington 42 19 and tenth-ranked Nebraska downed Kansas State 50-21. Four teams which lost Saturday, Kansas, Tennessee, Missouri and Auburn, still received bowl bids but Arkansas blew a Peach Bowl bid when it was held to a 7-7 tie by SMU. It was a good day for three Heisman Trophy candidates, Ohio State’s Archie Griffin, Penn State’s John Cappelletti and Texas’ Roosevelt Leaks. Griffin rushed for a record 246 yards in Ohio State’s victory over Iowa Griffin, a sophomore, established a new single season Ohio State mark of 1,265 yards to smash the old record of 1,142 set by John Brockington in 1970. Cappelletti scored four touch downs for the second straight game and piled up 204 yards in leading Penn State past Ohio University. Leaks ran for 105 yards as Texas nailed down its Cotton Bowl bid with the 52-7 triumph over TCU. Leaks boosted his season total to 1,328. Willie Shelby and Duffy Bowles each ran back punts for touch downs to pace Alabama to the victory over Miami. Steve Davis and Joe Washington each scored two touchdowns to pace Oklahoma to the easy win over Kansas. Tony Di Rienzo booted a 60-yard field goal for the Sooners. Michigan led only 6-3 at half time, but exploded in the second half to trounce Purdue. Dennis Franklin and Bob Thombladh each scored twice. Safety Mike Pike intercepted two passes and Juan Roca kicked a 52-yard field goal ta pace LSU past Mississippi State. Kermit Johnson ran three touchdowns and 49 yards while boosting his season total to 1,022 in the UCLA victory over Oregon State.
