Rice’s comment was in response to the third place honors Oregon’s volleyball team earned at the University of Victoria Invitational Tournament Saturday in Victoria, Canada. The tournament consisted of an eight-team round robin with each school playing seven matches of two games each. One point was awarded for each game win. The University of British Columbia was undefeated and won the tournament with the full 14 points. Chimo, an independent Canadian volleyball team came in second with 11 wins and three losses, and Oregon took third place with a 10-4 record. Rice said Oregon’s strong point was in blocking and cited sophomores Karen Banks and Diane Ventre as, “doing a very good job in both blocking and hitting.” Rice noted a difference in Canadian female athletes. She said, “For Canadians, sports isn’t for one specific sex, it’s for people - and it shows. Com petition from the Canadian teams was outstanding.” UBC has one former and one current national player. National players are those representing Canada in both the Pan-American and Olympic games. Although this is the third time Oregon’s been invited to compete in this tournament, it’s the first time they could participate. “This is the first time we had the funding for the trip,” Rice said. Oregon’s next game is with Portland State University, Tuesday, Nov. 19, in Portland.
