Professor links deception, fantasy
during Fantasy Symposium lecture

The same principles of
deception used by magicians to
entertain us can also be used to
take advantage of our fantasies,
said Ray Hyman, University
professor of psychology and
former magician.
Hyman’s lecture on fantasy
and deception, sponsored by the
Northwest Forum in conjunction
with this week’s Fantasy Sym
posium, was held Tuesday in the
EMU. It featured a number of
demonstrations which drew
laughter and applause from the
large, appreciative audience.
Hyman first contrasted what
he termed “fantasy thinking”
with “reality thinking.”
“Fantasy thinking is more
intuitional, irrational, and in
response to our fears and desires,
while reality thinking is more
constrained and detached from
our emotions.
“Yet the two are not op
posites—both are very important

and one without the other leads to
a distortion of reality," Hyman
said.
“Ordinarily we can trust our
fantasies, but they also can be
exploited,” continued Hyman,
explaining three ways in which
we can be deceived. He
demonstrated with several
amusing and baffling card and
rope tricks.
“First is deception by the
conjurer or sleight of hand artist,
who plays on a temporary fan
tasy theme, but by mutual
consent of the audience," who
knows what he’s up to, Hyman
said.
“The conjurer isn’t out to
swindle his audience, but his
techniques are used by other, less
scrupulous deceivers.
“The second way in which we
may be deceived is by the
swindler,” Hyman said. “He’s
out to get something for nothing.”
Hyman included the “occult
charlatan,” who plays on our
desire for immortality by contact
with the dead, in this category.
“Third is the psychic preten
der,” Hyman said. “He
capitalizes on extrasensory
perception and escape from the
confines of the mind and body, a
little more plausible than com
munication with the dead.”
This he demonstrated using the
“Ray Hyman Little Wonder
Thought Projection System,” “a
gimmick to guarantee that
people can send thoughts.” This
trick, more facetious than his
others, used a “double
oscillator,” or eggbeater, to send
out thought waves to a member of
the audience.
“Fantasies can be deceiving
yet at the same time are
necessary to many aspects of our
live and such things as art and
legitimate magic,” Hyman said.
“The problem is how to en
courage fantasy without being
harmfully deceived by it.”
Solar energy bill
to be introduced
in U.S. Senate
A bill providing $50 million to
determine the feasibility of utili
zing solar energy to heat and cool
homes and businesses will be
introduced Thursday in the U.S.
Senate.
Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.),
Sen. Bob Packwood (R-Ore ),
and four other senators are co
sponsoring the bill, the Solar
Heating and Cooling Act of 1973.
The $50 million will be used for
research and development of
solar energy utilization systems,
and the construction of demon
stration projects.
The bill would authorize the
Department of Housing and Ur
ban Development, in conjunction
with the National Science Found
ation and the National Bureau of
Standards, to enter into contracts
for research, development, and
demonstration projects.
The first priority of the bill is a
three-year program to test the
feasibility of using solar energy
for heating.
Concurrently, a five-year pro
gram will seek to develop and
demonstrate the feasibility of a
combined solar heating and cool
ing system.
Solar energy has been presen
ted as an alternative to nuclear
power by many anti-nuclear pow
er groups.
