Error-plagued JVs tied by Pups A classic do-or-die situation confronted the Oregon JV’s at the end of a frustrating after noon against the Washington Pups Friday afternoon. With 49 seconds on the clock, Tim Gilliland attempted a 32 yard field goal. It fluttered some 25 misdirected yards. Gilliland’s unsuccessful boot was the last in a long series of critical fourth quarter errors which forced the Ducks to settle for a 21-21 tie. As disappointed JV Head Coach Larry Miller said at the end of the game, “We simply threw this one away.” Indeed,they had. On the series of downs pre vious to the decisive field goal attempt, Oregon fumbled the ball away on the six-inch line. The Duck backfield was haunted by the loss of six fumbles on an otherwise good afternoon. i ne Klips were no less immune to coughing up the ball. Only they seemed to prefer the aerial turnover—four Washing ton passes were intercepted. These miscues were accompani ed by a pair of fumbles. In to tal. the game featured 14 turn overs. Early in the first quarter, an Oregon fumble on its own 20 turned the ball over to the Pups, setting up their first touchdown. Cocky Pup quarter back Blane Miller, who released his own press-book as a New Mexico prepper of moderate ability, ran the ball in from the two. The first Oregon score was set-up by Bill Hupfer’s intercep tion of a Miller pass. Hupfer’s 20 yard run-back put the ball on the Washington 36. Several plays later, Duck quarterback Tom Cafferty hit Dan Boustead, brother of an Oregon State pass receiver, in the end zone. Defensive captain Jim Heber lein made an acrobatic inter ception of a Miller aerial later in the first quarter. Minutes later, Tim Griffith landed the Ducks’ third interception of the quarter. This one set up the second JV touchdown, a twenty four yard strike to Les Dunman. In the second quarter, the Pups recovered a controversial Duck fumble on the Oregon 25. Using another quarterback, Cliff McBride, the Pups quickly scored, knotting the game at 14-all. A 19-yard Oregon punt set up the third, and last, Pup score of the game. The leading Washing ton rusher, Mike Vacino moved it in from the nine. Near the start of the second half, an Oregon drive, which was highlighted by a 44-yard burst by Mike Fouts (no relation to the prodigious Duck alumnus, Dan Fouts), reached a premature end when a Cafferty pass was intercepted on the 25. But on the next series, the JV’s scored to even things at 21 apiece. This score was aided by a 48-yard pass completion from Cafferty to highly-touted fresh man Jeff Butts. Cafferty ran the ball in from the thirteen for the TD. In the fourth quarter, both teams threatened to score. The Pup effort was halted by a holding penalty and a quarter back sack. Oregon’s best effort— a drive to the six-inch line, ended with a fumble. At the end of the quarter, the JV’s moved to the 11-yard line, but Gilliland’s errant footwork secured the deadlock. Controversy surrounded the closing field goal effort. Former varsity kicker Keith Lively sat on the JV bench, prepared for action. When asked why he chose Gilliland over Lively, Coach Miller said, “Gilliland has done a good job this year. He’s 2 for 3, and today his PAT’s have been strong and accurate. And Keith has had little opportunity to work with our holder.” V.V.V.V.V/.V.V.V^'.
