ode the emerald's weekly entertainment section Taj Mahal, Cheeeh and Chong Photo from Ode Records Cheech and Chong Photo from Cultural Forum Taj Mahal The Taj Mahal concert this Saturday evening is sold out and there have been numerous complaints ami questions as to why there were only 950 ticket available for the show. Officials at the Cultural Forum give the following reasons for the early sellout: First, there is always a touch-and-go situation when booking an artist. It is impossible to tell how well anyone will draw. Secondly, the University has a problem with facilities. We have two halls, the EMU Ballroom and Mac Court. The Ballroom is quite small and there just aren’t an awful lot of people that will play there because of the high price that performers get nowadays. Mac Court has problems that everyone knows about, mainly the fire hazards. Mac Court can be used only on a very few and selected occasions. When the Taj Mahal concert sold out on Monday, the Cultural Forum contacted Taj Mahal to see if he would be willing to do a second show. The problem was that he didn’t want to do a second show that started at 10:30 or 11 at night and it was felt that it would be unfair to ticket holders who planned on an 8p.m. show to move it up an hour. So we are left with (me show and a lot of unhappy people who didn’t get tickets. If you didn’t get a ticket, there is some consolation. The concert will be broadcast live and in stereo on KZEL-FM beginning about 9 p.m. Future concerts in the Ballroom will have the same problem, so if you want to see a concert, it would be to your advantage to get your tickets as early as possible. Bruce Micklus Cheech and Chong bring their comedy act to Eugene this Sunday, as Double Tee Promotions, Inc., is sponsoring a show at Lane Com munity College. It begins at 7 p.m., a bit earlier than most concerts start, and features as a second act the music of Tony Joe White. Tickets, priced at $3.50 in advance and $4 at the door, are available at the LCC information desk, the EMU main desk, the Sun Shop, Crystalship. and Meier and Frank Valley River. Cheech and Chong have sold more albums at a faster rate than any other comedy act in the history of the recording industry, ac cording to Double Tee president David Leiken. Their first two albums, “Cheech and Chong” and “Big Bambu,” have both sold more than a million copies, and their new effort, “Los Cochinos,” sold a million even before it was shipped. Their single, “Basketball Jones,” is rated in the top 20 in every one of the nation’s record surveys, Leiken says. Smoking will not be permitted in the LCC gym, where the show will take place.
