(II) Special subscriptions for persons not included in category (I) are available at a rate of *12 00 per year, *10.00 per academic year and $4 00 per term Editor Torrie McAllister General Manager Al Phelps Advertising Manager David dinings [ On Campus _ Beck named to NSF post Jacob Beck, University professor of psychology, has accepted an administrative position for most of the current year with the National Science Foundation. Beck, who has been given leave from the University, will be Program Director of the Psychobiology Program in the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences in the Directorate for Research. While NSF normally appoints selected specialists for such positions for approximately a year, special arrangements have been made to permit Professor Beck to return to the University to teach Winter Term, 1974, classes. A member of the University faculty since 1966, Professor Beck is a graduate of Yeshiva University, New York, N.Y. and received his advanced degrees from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. His areas of specialization are perception, psychophysics, and vision. Gerontology Club meets tonight All those interested in aging and the elderly are invited to attend the first meeting of the Gerontology Club, tonight at 7:30 in the EMU. The room will be posted. The status of the club and activities for fall term will be discussed. Proficiency exams offered Students wishing to take the proficiency examiniations for specific skill areas may sign up at the Physical Education Office in Gerlinger Annex. Written tests will be administered on either Tuesday or Wednesday evenings of October 16th and 17th. Testing time will be from 7:00-9:00 p.m in Room 10 of Gerlinger. Students passing the written phase of the proficieiy:y exam will be referred to activity co ordinators for completion of the skill phase. The purpose of proficiency tests in the Physical Education Service Program is to allow students to demonstrate their ability in certain physical activities in order to delete part or all of their University requirements in physical education. Proficiency tests do not award credit toward a degree. Proficiency tests will be given in those beginning courses that lend themselves to practical examiniations. Sheets listing these courses are posted throughout the Physical Education Complexes. The deadline for signing up for proficiency examiniations for Fall Term is Friday. October 12th. Rabbi to speak on Israel study program Rabbi Joshua Stampfer, director of Portland State University’s Israel Studies Program, will speak at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Erb Memorial Union, room to be posted. The program will be the winter and spring terms of 1974, January 7 to June 7, in Jerusalem, Israel. Course options include. Beginning and Advanced Hebrew, History of Modern Israel and Biblical Archeology, Comparative Religion, and Israel’s Social Structure. Academic credit of 15 hours per term will be granted by Portland State and is transferable to the University. The program includes excursions outside Jerusalem, archeological digs, and-or two weeks on a kibbutz, depending on the course work chosen. Eugene mayor featured at Northwest forum Northwest Forum is a new Cultural Forum program series designed to focus attention upon the people and events that are shaping the politics, arts, and public opinion of our region. Tuesday, October 9, Les Anderson, Mayor of Eugene, will join students, faculty and staff in the Erb Memorial Union for an informal discussion and exchange of ideas. Mayor Anderson will discuss University community relations and other pertinent topics. The Forum will begin at 12:30 and everyone is invited to bring their lunch. The room will be posted. Strike up that old refrain... University alumni who played in the band when they were students are invited to return to the University to make up an Alumni Band on November 10. The Alumni Band will play at the Homecoming football game between Oregon and UCLA on November 10. Clark to serve on Rhodes Committee University President Robert Clark will serve again as chairman of the Northwest District Committee of Selection for the Rhodes Scholarships. He has served for the past four years. The committee, which interviews applicants and selects the scholarship awardees, will meet for the selection in Portland on December 15. Winners of the scholarships attend Oxford University in England. Four awardees are selected from the Northwest District, which is comprised of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
