Children’s Community School emphasizes growing, sharing By JAMIE HARTSHORN Of the Emerald At Children’s Community School the little red schoolhouse of yesteryear has been replaced by a green one, and progressive ideas reign over staid, traditional concepts. The school, located at 1367 Madison, certainly doesn’t fit the standard mold. Absent are rows of desks and other trappings usually associated with classrooms. The main area is a large shag carpeted room with a blackboard against one wall, an upright piano against another. Venetian blinds let in the afternoon sunlight and a big blond dog, evidently a part of the school scene, basks in its warmth. It’s an “open classroom” situation. “Children here are free to get into what they want,” explained Janice Zagorin, coordinator. “They make their own decisions on what they want to learn. “It’s an elementary educational alternative for low income children,” she said, “that is private, non-profit, and meets state school regulations.” Members of the all-volunteer school staff include Zagorin, Malcolm Brodzinsky, Art Evidon. Ann Blandin and Water. “The school also makes use of ESCAPE tutors from the University,” said Zagorin. “Both parents of an attending child must put in a minimum of five hours a week at the school.” “We’re trying to break away from the idea that it’s the mother’s responsibility alone to raise the child.” Sixteen Lane County children, ranging in age from six to 12 veark old are currently enrolled at Children’s Community School, which meets from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each pays an average tuition fee of $20 a month. “Last year the school was funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity,” said Zagorin. “This year it’s supported only by tuition and what money we are able to raise.” To benefit the school, a poetry reading is planned for 8 p.m. (Continued on Page 15) Photo by Stuart Stone HEY Ho,FoL)t- !T'S t(^TTi-Y Ttt place- '«rrvH£ fo^ -THt'~7{?>VEbnxJteS ^ C\Avb H'i ''Faithful- wCTek-• UttL.
