Ducks face crucial test against explosive Utah The Oregon Ducks are putting it on the line tomorrow when they take on Utah at Autzen Stadium. After two poor performances against Arizona State and Air Force in their last two times out, Coach Dick Enright desparately needs to get his program back on the right track. And Utah may not be the . right team for the purpose. Last Saturday the Utes clob bered Texas-El Paso 82-6. And as Enright said, “That’s a lot of points, even against a high school team.” While Oregon’s defense looked generally stronger last week against th» Falcons, it will have to mature very fast to be ready for Utah. “Things are going to be tough this week,” Enright said. “We’ve got to go at 100 per cent at all times and we are not doing it yet. We are not going to tolerate anyone being lethargic anymore...” The Ducks certainly can’t afford to play lethargically Saturday. For the third straight week, the Ducks will do battle with one of the great quarterbacks in the Pirates drop game back PITTSBURGH (UPI)-Rookie Chris Zachary wild-pitched home the winning run in the 13th inning Thursday night to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, dropping the Pirates a game behind the Mets in the NL East. Zachary, the last of six Pitt sburgh pitchers, got into trouble in the 13th when Greg Luzinski led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Bill Robinson. Attempting to intentionally walk Bob Boone, Zachary got the ball over the plate and Boone hit it for a single to center that sent Luzinski to third. Mike Schmidt then struck out for the third straight time but with a l-and-2 count on Larry Bowa, Zachary uncorked his wild pitch. The Mets, idle Thursday night, have an 80-78 record and play their final four games at Chicago this weekend. Pittsburgh now is 79-79 and begins a three-game homestand with Montreal Friday night. The Pirates, who lost the pennant last season when Bob Moose wild-pitched home the winning run in the final game of the NL playoffs against Cin cinnati, also have a makeup game remaining against San Diego here Monday if the pennant race is still undecided. Don Van Galder already holds 10 school records and played little more than half the game against UTEP. Van Galder also has an ex cellent target for his passes in flanker Steve Odom, who last year caught 30 passes for 663 yards (22.1 yard average). He also collared 11 touchdown passes, including a 79yard bomb from Van Galder. “Van Galder presents a lot of > problems,” said Enright. “He is an outstanding quarterback. He rolls well, either on the drop back, or on the roll out. Utah is a fine offensive team and not bad on defense.” To throw against the Ute defense, the Ducks have the leading rusher in the Pacific-8 in Donnie Reynolds with a 106.0 game average-some 22 yards per-game better than second-best rusher Kermit Johnson of UCLA. Reynolds has carried the ball 44 times for 212 yards and a touch down for a 4.8 average per carry. Norval Turner and Herb Singleton, if it is indeed deter mined he is eligible by then as rumored, will have Russ Francis to throw at. Francis has caught nine passes in two games, six against Air Force. An interesting battle may emerge in the trenches. Unlike most teams that will be playing the Ducks, Utah doesn’t give away much in size and strength. Utah’s defensive tackles are Ron Rydalch who is 6 4, 260 and Gary Keller, 6-6, 244. The pair will play across from Tim Guy, 6-6, 243 and Ron Hunt, 6-6, 273. Oregon’s defense, led by unheralded middle linebacker Bill Meyer, will face quite similar problems as they have faced in the last two games—a good quarterback, with good receivers and speedy running backs. Meyer has become a key at stopping the running game. Meyer leads the team in tackles, both unassisted with 13 and total tackles with 21. Supersoph Reggi Lewis follows with 19. The defensive secondary, which gave up two cheap touch downs against Arizona State, looked much better at Air Force, giving up no play longer than 14 yards. Only Merlin Mann, last year’s cellar-dweller returns. James Russell, who has been studying football since the middle of July, figures he has it all already wrapped up. Tennis playing Mike Ycrkey figures Bobby Riggs will win (?), while Don Chapman and Bob Selch are hoping for at least a split in 20 game predictions.
