Juliette Corwin believes that as a retired person, she must keep fit socially and physically. Her daughter lives in Salem, and she finds this helpful because it gives both her and her husband social access to different age groups. “The care of your physical body is something you must care about,” she said. She has signed up for the YWCA program in Salem to keep fit. “It allows me to remain ‘zingy’,” she said. Louise Craig, however, thinks that it is unnecessary for the retired person to remain “zingy.” “You have to battle to maintain a certain relationship with people,” she said. She feels retirement should let people feel and be more independent. Referring to retirement, she said, “You’re in a position to be completely individual.” Juliette Corwin feels that retirement is tougher on a man than a woman. “Men don’t keep schedules while in Retirement and this is a problem,” she said. “Schedules make the decisions too often for men in their jobs.” According to John Craig, when a person is 50 he should start planning for his retirement, and that upon retirement, the person needs to find a new identity. Craig added that many in his generation had no meaning as individuals while still in their jobs. “Your meaning was in the job you did. You had no realistic identification,” said Craig “Identification by the work ethic is one of our greatest hazards.” Louise Craig attributed her husband’s present change in personality to retirement. “I have seen the delightful per sonality my husband was born with come out during his retirement,” she said. “It was smothered before retirement because of the tension and anxiety he was experiencing.” According to John Craig, “Professional people have a harder time retiring. They’re used to decision-making." As a minister, Craig feels he makes decisions because he’s been dictating as an authority for so long. But he says he realizes he is no longer in this position and that retirement has prompted him to assume a less authoritative role and attitude. Considerable fulfillment in retirement has come to George Corwin as a result of his working closely with Frances Scott and the Center for Gerontology. Corwin said he “felt like an ex pert” after his classes with Scott, and supports mini-programs which would cover the most vital aspects of retirement. The Center for Gerontology provides two summer institutes — Education for the Retirement Years and Life Planning for Mature Women.
