Women to be admitted to Army ROTC
Women will be admitted this fall, for the first time, to the
University’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps ROTC).
Colonel William Burr, professor of military science, announced
the army decision Thursday. He said the Army has been conducting
tests during the past year, in selected institutions, with women in the
ROTC programs, and as a result the decision was made to admit
women to the programs in all institutions where the institutional head
(president) requested it. .
Col Burr said that no major changes will be made in the
University’s ROTC program. The women will wear Army WAC
uniforms and take the WAC standard basic physical proficiency test.
Other than that, they will be treated the same as the men in the
program.
Women will be eligible for ROTC scholarships as men are. The
scholarships cover tuition, textbooks, laboratory fees, phis a $100 a
month allowance.
