Photo by James Link Mac Wilkins is NCAA discus favorite Women crew in easy win The women’s novice-eight crew fortunately did not repeat last week’s nerve wracking mistake of missing the finish. Last weekend in the Women’s Western Rowing Championships at Oakland’s Lake Merrit, the novice-eight not only made it past the finish line, but also trium phantly took first place in their 1800-meter race, finishing ahead of five other crews, including those of OSU and Lake Merrit. The women proved that they are undisputedly the best novice crew on the West Coast. Although the Oregon heavyweight-four placed third in their qualifying race — thus failing to make the finals — their time was an excellent one, equalling that of the national record set last year in Philadelphia. The lightweight-four finished third out of the six competing crews in their division. In the lightweight-pair race, Oregon’s “mighty munchkin duo,” Jeannie Arnold and Mary Silvey, rowed to a very im pressive second place finish. In the heavyweight pair, Jane Luzar and Zan Pratt finished third. All four of these women, who had not practiced together in pairs until late last week, indeed made remarkable showings in their races. It’ll actually be fight for 2nd LSU picks Oregon It would seem everyone knows the NCAA track and Field Championship meet next week in Baton Rouge, La., belongs to UCLA, right? Well Louisiana State University wasn’t told. They doped out the NCAA tournament on paper this week and somehow came up with Oregon winning with 68 points and UCLA in second with 60. The LSU publicity department figured it out by scoring the top six qualifiers in each event. And of course, there was the flaw. Steve Prefontaine was figured to win three events. He was to score 30 of Oregon’s 68 points. Pre holds the top qualifying marks in the mile, three-mile and six-mile events going into the meet, but somebody forgot to tell LSU that because of the heat and humidity, Pre will stick to one race — the three-mile. Take away 20 prints, and it throws Oregon right back into second place — right where they belong. (Kansas was sewed for third with 42.) So it is still UCLA’s meet. And rightfully so. Coach Jim Bush said prior to the Pacific-8 meet that his Bruins would have more trouble winning the conference title than the NCAA. The Pac-8 title was claimed quite handily, by 45 points over Southern Cal. Because of the climate — and the timing of the NCAA meet — in Louisiana, Oregon Coach Bill Dellinger announced he is not going to double any of his distance runners. He also decided to cut the squad to 20. “The people we are taking have given indications by their times and marks in the past two weeks that they are capable of scoring in the NCAA meet,” Dellinger said. Although taking only 20 (each team is allowed 24 entries), the Ducks are indeed a power to be dealt with. Prefontaine should easily win his unprecedented fourth straight NCAA three-mile title. Mac Wilkins should also score heavily. He placed fourth last year in the discus. His 209-7 discus is the second best ever by a collegian and is best this year. His 63-7 shot put won the Pac-8 title and rates third among collegians this year. Oregon milers Knut Kvalheim (3:57.9), Mark Feig (3:59.5) and Scott Daggatt (4:01.0) could all place. Steeplechaser Todd Lathers has the second fastest time of the nation’s collegians and Craig Brigham has the second best decathlon mark. Coming off a strong 880 this week, Steve Bence could also grab a placing in a strong 880 field. He was sixth last year at 800 meters. Oregon’s relay teams scored last year and should get some points again this year. The mile relay team was second last year and the 440 was fourth. Although the only way to overtake UCLA is by the Bruins blowing it themselves, Oregon should be definitely be in the fight for runner-up — if they can perform in hot and humid South. Oregon judo team successful In a recent University Judo team competition, the Oregon contingent walked off with two solid dual meet victories against Oregon State and Moses Lake, in tri-squad competition. In the white belt classification, Pancras Wong took first and Chen Tack captured third in the flyweight competition. Mike Bloom also had a third spot in the lightweight division as Grant Gloor and Mike Mathews the Ducks in the heavyweight, fly-weight classification. In the brown belt set, Alan Takao and Howard Takenaka were second and third for the Webfoots in lightweight. During tough black belt judo action, team captain Jesse Barash won the lightweight classification and Ted Nakata was a heavyweight winner. Photo by Steve Twedt *P' m mm Freshman Craig Brigham eyes NCAA decathlon IM crown to Quimps The Quimps, scoring a tremendous array of points in 12 different intramural sports, chalked up the Men’s Intramural Team Championship for 1972-73. The Quimps totaled 1162 points, 419 fall term, 378 winter term and 365 spring term. The quimps breakdown in scoring by sport is: football 150, bowling 80, wrestling 69, volleyball I 62, volleyball II 58, basketball 1140, basketball II 92, handball 74, weight lifting 72, track 67, swimming 54, tennis 74, golf 45 and softball 125.
