Music professor receives Ersted Award Peter Bergquist, 42-year-old associate professor of music history, theory and bassoon, will receive the University’s 1973 Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching at the June 10 Com mencement services. The Ersted Award is made available through a trust fund from the late A.J. Ersted of Atherton, Calif., who indicated that the money should be used to encourage and reward distinguished teaching to relatively young faculty mem bers who have demonstrated exceptional ability to encourage students to reason rather than to memorize The awards, in his words, should “stimulate an interest in inspired teaching in the classroom and in con ference.” The trust fund, with one or two $1,000 awards made annually from accumulated interest, is administered by the University Development Fund. Bergquist was selected by a committee from nominations made by faculty, students and alumni. A native ol Sacramento, California, Bergquist has taught at the University School of Music for nine years. Previously he had taught at Marines College of Music in New York, and Columbia University. He is a graduate of Marines College of Music, where he received his Baccalaureate degree in 1958. He had previously attended Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. Columbia University awarded his master’s degree in 1960 and his doctoral degree in 1964, both in musicology. From 1960 to 1962, he held the Clarence Barker Musical Scholarship at Colum bia. He is a member of the American Musicological Society and has served as secretary of the Pacific Northwest Chapter since 1968, and on the Council since 1971. He is also a member of the College of Music Society and the Music Library Association. Bergquist has performed professionally on bassoon with a woodwind quintet in New York for Young Audiences, Inc., and on tour with Little Orchestra Society of New York. He played also in student orchestras and chamber ensembles while at Eastman and Mannes. He has been a member of the University Woodwind Quintet since 1964, with frequent performances in Eugene and elsewhere. He has played with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra since 1966, making a number of solo appearances. In 1972, the woodwind Quintet, with Bergquist as bassoonist, made a recording, “New Music for Woodwind Quintet,” that has been put out by Advance Records. In 1971, Bergquist was on sabbatical leave for eight months. He spent most of that time in London, making an analytical study of Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 in relation to its published sketches.
