Marcel Marceau in Portland Marcel Marceau. who appeared at Portland’s Civic Auditorium Sunday, astounded a capacity crowd with his display of the art of mime. In a series of short acts he depicted various life situations through body movement and facial expression. The universally acclaimed pantomime genius recreated several of his classic works which are from a repertoire that he has perfected over many years. Among these was a brilliant satire entitled ‘■Hie Mask Maker.” and “Sunday in the Park,” in which be imitated a variety of French people taking part in a cultural tradition. In “The Trial,” be conveyed four separate characterizations with a remarkably smooth transition, and provoked both laughter and sadness from his audience. The highlight of the performance, demonstrationg Monsieur Marceau’s abilities at their best, was his “Youth. Maturity. Old Age and Death." He portrayed this sensitive, poignant sequence of life with unmatched grace and agility. Of this scene one critic said Marceau “accomplishes in less than two minutes what most novelists cannot do in volumes.” This is an apt summation of the great artist. _ Heather Jolly Fellini’s CLOWNS Return by Popular Demand Sunday, May 27, U Theatre , TH€ U1/G6ITY RLM SOCIETY ^ RECYCLE!
