The successful applicant will start work April 23 and wilt be employed through May of 1974. The primary duty of the advertising manager is the care and feedmg of the sales staff. It should be the task of the advertising manager to hire, train, motivate and coordinate the sales staff. To this end, she he must be able to evaluate people as potential salesmen, teach them, excite them, organize the accounts and generally manage them— seek new accounts, plan and carry out specific promotions. Next, but in no way less important, it should be the responsibility of the manager to improve Emerald-client relations and the image of the Emerald in the community. Notions of incompetence, fickle per formance and a market of miniscule proportions must be overcome. The best and only way to do that is through evidence of professional-type performance. In addition the advertising manager should be responsible for coordinating all aspects of advertising that appear in the paper. Format, content and design of the ads should be subiect to constant supervision and constructive criticism. Of major im portance in this regard is the task of dum mying. Many things happen when the paper is dummied. The limits of the news layout are determined (the news layout can be no better than the ad layout allows), ads must be included, discrepancies identified. It is an opportunity to become quite familiar with who is selling, who is advertising, etc. It is a source of knowledge and responsibility necessary tor effective control. It should go without saying that the ad vertising manager must be responsible for providing all loots, information, ideas and resources which will make life easier for the sales staff This includes everything from a good supply of pencils and layout sheets to records indicating inches, rates, and frequency of past advertising, detailed information about ea.n account, all in a readily available tor n. Most of these are relatively simple to carry out and can easily be done during the course of the day. The personality of the advertising manager is as important to the smooth functioning of the department as the con scientious performance of the duties The person chosen must be able to draw upon a variety of roles to deal with a variety of people: clients, production staff, news staff as well as his her own staff. Needless to say, an outgoing personality would be helpful. Intra staff relations are especially sensitive. The advertising manager must advise, nag. console, encourage and mediate He-she must make special effort to understand each member of the staff. He she must be a visionary of sorts and able to share these visions and enthusiasm for them with others. He she must be responsive to input from all sources and able to readily grasp a situation and begin understanding the problems and potentials involved Above all the advertising manager must be willing to never pass the buck and able to face any kind of crisis—large or small—with equanimity and perspective Please apply at 301 Allen Hall before April IS, 1973 The Emerald is an equal op portunity employer Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
