Pnoto by Ptiil WakJstem Dean Roberts after another Duck HR .Against Pac-8 leading OSU Oregon needs a sweep By KEN MAYS Of the Emerald The Oregon varsity baseball squad will face Oregon State in Corvallis today. Hie Ducks will put their lfr-5 record on the line against an experienced Beaver ballclub which is leading the Pac-8 Northern Division race on the basis of a three-game sweep of Washington last weekend Head Coach Mel Krause will go with his ace righthander Mike Shoup today. Greg Richards and Brian Shandera have earned starting spots in Saturday’s doubleheader with OSU at Howe Field on the basis of their performances in this week’s games against Linfield and Portland State. Steve Townsend, who injured his elbow pitching against PSU said Thursday he felt all right, but Krause said he will try not to use him in the OSU series. Guy Krause, Oregon’s all-league right-fielder who injured his wrist last Friday against WSU, should be ready for OSU. Coach Krause said be will play Guy if OSU starts a left-hander today. Krause claims his Ducks must win all three from OSU if they expect to stay in the division race. He added that any team in the division was capable of upsetting Washington State, in which case Oregon would be back in the race. Krause realizes that his team can ill afford to overlook the Beavers, though. “We’ll play every game to win and not worry about what they’re (WSU) doing,” be said. Krause is as yet undecided over who his top relief pitchers will be. “We’ll play whoever can do the job for us,” he said. Oregon State leads in the team hitting depart ment with a .373 average in Pac-8 baseball statistics released this week. The Ducks rank third with a .28/ team average. OSU also ranks second in team pitching with a staff earned-run average of 2.16, and Beaver first baseman Bruce Jackson leads in the individual batting statistics with a .750 average. Jackson went 9-for-12, including two home runs, last weekend against the Huskies. Two other OSU players also placed in the top five in individual batting. Oregon shortstop Rich Chase is ranked seventh with a .538 average. Perhaps the most disturbing statistic is in the team pitching department, where Oregon’s staff ranks sixth with a 6.48 earned-run average. Golfers plummet from contention in tourney The Ducks faded rapidly in yesterday's second round of the All-America Golf Classic in Houston, as all of Oregon's golfers skied several strokes over par-72. Oregon slipped into a tie for 17th place with Arizona in the prestigious tournament, after en tering the clubhouse in a tie for 9th after Wed nesday’s initial round. Both Oregon’s star senior Craig Griswold and freshman Peter Jacobsen fell twelve strokes behind leader Bill Rogers of Houston with two round totals of 149 The remaining Ducks, Carl Scbwantje, Dick Shafer, and John Adler continued to have their difficulties at Houston. Both Scbwantje and Shafer totaled 159 after two rounds with John Adler far off the pace at 172. The Houston Cougars are running away with the team title with a 575 total, leaving two-time defending NCAA Champion, Texas, ten strokes behind at 585 Oklahoma State has 587, followed by Florida, 589, Georgia, 592, Alabama, 596, Indiana, 600. North Texas State, 602. Washington, 603, and Southern Methodist. 605. Houston, Georgia, and Texas each have two golfers among the top ten in the individual title race. Texas’s phenomenal Ben Crenshaw, who just returned from the Granddaddy of all golf tour naments, “the Masters,” is in eighth place with a 145 total. Washington’s Gary Sater is in ninth with a 146. Oregon has two days remaining to try and better their present team rank of 17th. Oregon finished in a tie for sixth in last year’s All-America Classic which enhanced their chances of reaching the NCAA Tournament. Oregon’s team finish in both the All-America Classic and the Pac-8 are major determining factors for selecting the six teams from District 8 that will reach the NCAA Tournament. The University women’s tennis team won their second consecutive match of the season 7-0 against Mt. Hood Com munity College Wednesday. Last week the Oregon team defeated Oregon College of Education by the same scare. The 7-0 scare indicates that all four singles players and all three doubles teams for Oregon won their matches. In Wed nesday's match, all but one doubles team won their matches in two games. Casy Crandall and Myrna West lost their first game 3-6 but went on to win the next two games 7-6 and 6-1 to win the match. The women’s tennis team goes against Portland State University on Tuesday. Women's second straight Netters win, WRA wants players Inner tube polo The Women’s Recreation Association (WRA) provides a pool, inner tubes, goals, a lifeguard and a ball. All they need and want are bodies — both men’s and women's to play informal co-ed inner tube water polo. Geriinger Pool is set aside for water polo on Monday night* from 7 to 8:30 p.m. But if there isn’t some participation WRA will have to clo6e down the activity. Players are encouraged to come this Monday. Men can change in the locker room in Geriinger Annex and should bring their own towels. The women’s locker room in Geriinger is open that evening, too. For team handball Clinic Saturday The Oregon Physical Education Majors Association is sponsoring a Team Handball Clinic Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in Gerlinger Annex in the University campus. Team Handball is the second most popular game in the world for men and women. The game will be played in the 1976 Munich Olympics by both men and women. Although not widely known, the game is now played by many schools and colleges in this country. Rick Abraham son, a member of the 1972 Munich Olympic team, will be the clinic instructor. He can be considered one of the Team Handball “experts” in the U.S. A team from will demonstrate actual game play. This is a unique opportunity to learn an up and coming game from an internationally experienced competitor. All students, coaches and teachers are welcome and encouraged to attend!
