L ANN OLSON’S GRACE ON THE BEAM™ IMson takes four events Freshman Ann Olson won four of five events to lead the University to a first place finish in the Pacific-8 women’s gymnastics championships Saturday in Gerlinger Hall. Oregon edged by the University of Washington 87.50 to 81.42 to win the four-way competition. Washington State was third with 60.70 pants and Oregon State trailed with 50.05. The only event which Buvick didn’t win, the balance beam, was taken by teammate Martha Warner, a junior. Another freshman, Linda Stuber, placed second to Buvick in all-around con petition. UCLA, scheduled to compete Saturday, did not. Oregon coach Marilyn Fitch said the win puts Oregon in good shape fa- this weekend’s Northwest College Women’s Sports Association championships in Seattle. Oregon has lost only to Oregon College of Education this season and Fitch looks for a first or second place finish in the championships. The top six places in each event in the championships qualify for national competition in April. Top finishers in each event Saturday were: Vaulting: 1. Ann Olson, UO, 8.70. 2. (tie) J. Sharon Wheeler, OSU. 1 Photo by James Link OREGON’S STELLA VOREAS SWIMS MEDLEY LEG Swimmers stay undefeated The University women’s swimming team preserved a perfect season record with a first place finish in last Thursday’s three-way meet. Southern Oregon College was second, Oregon State University third. Thursday’s meet concluded regular season dual and three-way competition for Oregon. Friday and Saturday they will host the Northwest College Women’s Sports Association championships at Leighton Pool. At that meet swimmers and divers have a chance to qualify for National competition in March. One Oregon swimmer, freshman Marion Buvick, reached qualifying times in two events Thursday. Buvick won and qualified in the 200 yard individual medley and the 400 yard freestyle. She is eligible for nationals regardless of her placing at the championships. The Oregon 200 yard freestyle relay team also qualified for nationals, winning that event Thurs day. The relay is composed of Ellen Schrier, Debbie Lee, Buvick and Gloria Nixon. . Sophomore Sally Landis, defending northwest champion in the 200 yard freestyle, did not compete in that event, but won two others, 50 yard freestyle and the 50 yard backstroke Thursday. OSU, 40 Washington shoots down Flying Ducks By JAMES RUSSELL Of the Emerald On Friday night the defending Pac-8 champion Washington Huskies defeated Oregon’s Flying Duck gymnasts by a 155.40 to 153.90 score. The Oregon team came within two events of blowing the Huskies out of the gym but Flying Duck Coack Bill Ballester addmitted “we just didn’t have it against Washington, and we may have broke when we shouldn’t have, but we still performed better against them than we did against British Columbia.’’ Ballester comments that, “the team really got up and responded to Washington at the start when the competition got tough, and we really didn’t have that many breaks, but we just didn’t put it all together on the parallel bars and high bar. The pressure hurt us; we just couldn’t do it. But that’s just part of the sport. We’ll be back.” Highlighting the Washington meet: sophomore Joe Per cival tied his own all-time event record on the side horse for the umpteenth time with a 9.20, winning the competition, un defeated freshman Bob Rikli captured the floor exercise with a 9.05, junior Kevin Cornelius took the rings competition with a first place 9.10, and senior co-captain Greg Maxwell tied with Washington specialist Pete Paulson to win the high bar at 9.05. Photo by James Link ROSKAM ON THE RINGS Coach Ballester stressed that, “I thought the side horse and floor exercise were superb against Washington. Percival, of course, did an outstanding job and if the rest of the team would have been able to hit a little bit better too we could have definitely beat them.” With two events to go in the Washington meet, the parallel bars and high bar, the Oregon Flying Ducks had a 2.30 point lead. They eventually lost the contest by 1.50 points in their toughest loss of the year. In their second meet of the weekend, on Saturday, the Ducks rebounded to routinely beat the University of British Columbia by a 151.90 to 138.70 score. Other Oregon highlights in the British Columbia meet were freshman Jim Lester defeating Percival on the side horse at 8.70 to 8.55, junior Kevin Cornelius again taking the rings com petition with a 9.20, Duck freshman Randy Lary upsetting teammate Greg Maxwell on the long horse vault at 8.55 to take first, and freshman Steve Roskam capturing the high bar with an 8.55 to take first place. V. Finley’s impressed Beavers murder Ducks Oregon State’s wrestling Beavers continue to impress people and Saturday it was Oregon’s turn to be impressed, for the second time this season. The Ducks were wracked up by Oregon State 31-11 in the final dual match of the season. The Beavers have been so impressive of late, that five members of the squad received All-American recognition by Amateur Wrestling News. The Ducks had three named. Mike Oilar was named to the AA second team, but the 126-pound junior was missed by the Ducks against OSU. Dave Luke, who won a 6-3 decision over Gordon Iiams Saturday, was named to the third team AA, and Wes Hines, sophomore at 190, was given honorable mention. But Saturday night Hines ran up against one of the reasons OSU will be the favority going into the Pacific-8 wrestling tournament this weekend. Greg Strobel stopped Hines 7-1 in the battle of All Americans. Strobel was a second team selection.
