Letters For Leiber There are many reasons why Harley Leiber is the superior candidate for ASUO senate from the College Inn, Co-ops position. Harley Leiber will not ignore the needs of the students in the University community and he will work for programs that benefit disadvantaged and minority groups. Harley Leiber will support: Alternative Education Minority Services and Migrant Labor Project Childcare and Development Center Human Rights Increased Womens Studies Programs Environmental Programs Harley Leiber is aware of the problems that confront students in our selfish, bloated society. Harley Leiber will work to solve the community problems in a way that will benefit students and all other needy people. Harley is sincere and conscientious and deserves your vote. Michael J. Bonner Senior: Political Science Bernice Hanson Sophomore: Sociology From Shifts My campaign for the humanities seat in the student Senate is the most important race of the election. As the humanities representative I will give my priorities to the proposed women’s studies center and ASUO day care funding with innovative programs as SEARCH and the unique Outdoor Program also receiving my support. First priority will be to amend the student code so that homosexuals, like other minorities, will be protected from a prejudiced teacher’s discrimination. Yes, there are teachers who don’t like homosexuals and manifest their prejudice with lower grades. The homosexual is given a choice bet ween having an open, honest relationship with her (or his) sexuality, or going into “the closet,” going into hiding. The gay individual can pas as straight and not have to suffer the social and scholastic stigma. This also forces the homosexual to live without even the hope of love. On campus there are hundreds of such people living personal nightmares; preparing themselves to live a life without affection. This situation is the main reason I am running for Senator. My exposure as a gay Senator will offer those assuming they have to hide with a visible alternative. My openness will also give these gay people the opportunity to reexamine themselves so that they can become more healthy and free in dealing with their sexuality. Honors English Program Candidate, Humanities-Liberal Arts For Wasson Talking about student apathy is a lot like talking about the weather. Everybody knows it’s there, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Apathy is a vast, impersonal force that doesn’t care if its snowstorm freezes our pipes. Fighting apathy is like sweeping the tides. Students at the University may have noticed a bizarre raindance performed on campus once very term. The actors in this curious drama gesticulate wildly, point at the sky and speak of ressurecting a fallen god, the Student Government. Real wackos, most of them, but is there any explanation for their frenetic dedication to their superstitious belief that they have any real power? Well, yes there is. These fanatics are going to spend fifty seven dollars of your money this year, and unless you have something to say about where this money goes, You’re getting soaked, even if it’s not raining. So this odd raindance is about the dollars that are leaving your pocket like water from a ducks’ yellow and green back. I suppose I should at this point mention that I endorse Greg Wasson for off-campus ASUO representative. Greg is a person who works for his money, and has come to appreciate its value, its evil, its tendency to dissappear. If you are concerned about where your money is spent, grab a broom, sweep back the tide and vote for increased funding of community projects and re evaluation of athletic allotments. Jack Wilson For Siegel Who does this Lee Siegel-freak think he is promoting apathy in student govern ment with his revolting Apathy In ternational Fruitcake Party? C’mon, I thought this was college and not Romper Room! This disgusting display of encouraging apathy seems to fit in just hunky-dory with the apathy I see on our campus. The turn out at the ASUO elections is the blatant proof of this mess. I personally think that it ought to be mandatory to vote in the ASUO elections. If smart-alecs like this activist Lee Siegel haven’t learned how to grow up yet, they ought to have it beat into them. God fearing men like myself are sickened by wise-ass creeps like this Siegel who in cidently is a contributing writer to our beloved Emerald. The Emerald ought to have to throw this Siegel out on his ass where he belongs! Voting fa* Lee Siegel would be a disgrace to Humanity, God, and American Politics! Let’s show this bum that somebody cares and vote against his apathy idiocy. I care and I’m proud of it! Jeffrey Walker Junior From Burgoyne The ASUO Senate lacks direction and efficiency. Every form of government is involved in personality and power con flicts, but usually this is only a part of the government’s role. I am afraid that the ASUO Senate is fulfilling only one role, the role of incompetence. There are some real problems within the University. The Senate has no real power, because the faculty and administration have the final say in most matters. It is up to the students to convince the faculty to agree to set up a student-faculty senate. This should be the major priority for the Senate. Fortunately the Senate has begun to work within Eugene’s political system. It is imperative that students get involved in community affairs. The Senate must take another step in solving community problems, because due to federal cut backs Day Care centers are in the midst of a financial crisis. The ASUO must give these centers the money necessary. The Senate must also become more involved in educational matters such as supporting student input on faculty tenure and promotion. Alter native educational programs such as SEARCH and ESCAPE must also have full support from the senate. It is about time for the Senate to get to work. There is much that could be done, but so many senators are involved in petty conflicts that they forget about the real problems of the University. The Senate should change into a dedicated representation of student opinions. I hope to be a part of this change. Lisa Burgoyne Political Science For Atkinson We, the undersigned, would like to show our support concerning the announcement that Tom Atkinson will be running for the Liberal Arts position on the ASUO Senate. Tom is a responsible person who is sin cerely dedicated to the University and its diversified student body. His outgoing personality permits daily contact with many people on this campus. He chooses to represent the “students as a whole” in stead of one particular interest group because he knows that students have many interests. Tom’s practice of giving equal time to everyone and every idea is something he learned when serving on Student Court last year. In urging you to vote, we ask that you seriously consider the prospect of electing Tom Atkinson to the position of Liberal Arts Senator. Kathy Black, Soph.-English Ed. and Eight names on file From Atkinson As I did not submit a petition for the ASUO Liberal Arts Senate position in time to run in the primary election, I though that the electorate deserves a few words of explanation for this delay and about my views on the office. To begin with, when I discovered that the voters had only one choice, Randy Shilts, whose dedication to special interest groups is stringently out of place in a working senate, I decided to offer myself as an alternative. The recent vogue in ASUO Senate candidates has been to list all the special interest groups that the candidate feels that he can align himself with. Randy Shilts claims to be the voice of women’s rights along with Gay People. My “special interest group” is the students. I believe strongly in the principle of majority rule and as an ASUO Senator it will be my duty to vote closely to what the consensus of my electorate is. At times there will be direct conflicts between the will of the majority and the rights of the minority. As an ASUO senator I will never allow the majority to run roughshod ova- minority rights. I ask you for your votes and pledge to you that if elected I will represent you with the highest degree of integrity. I would not run for this position if I did not feel that I could do a better job than my opposition. Tom Atkinson Pre-Journalism Sophomore For P. Bonner Pat Bonner is a candidate for the ASUO Senate running in the Sophomore Class contest against Jim Davis. Since I do know and have worked with both of these can didates I have come to the conclusion that Pat Bonner would be the best choice. I feel this way because of a number of reasons. First off, Pat has had the experience -as he had served one term in the senate before trying a bid for the Oregon legislature, which unfortunately he was narrowly defeated. I believe his political experience will be to the Senate’s ad vantage. He favors such programs which will be beneficial to the students like en vironmental and alternative education. He will work to dismantle the programs which serve as glorified social clubs and improve programs that directly affect problems of the students in the community. Pat Bonner will be a straight-talking, hard hitting, tough minded ASUO Senator. The General Election is this Wednesday and Thursday so I strongly urge everyone who wants a senator who will finally represent them in the ASUO Senate to vote for Pat Bonner.
