The children were photographed by James Maxwell. Sport parachutists organize new club The Webfoot Sport Parachu tists, a proposed dub sport, held its first organizational meeting Tuesday night at the EMU and elected a dub president. The objectives of the new dub, as determined Tuesday, are threefold and include the following: —The furthering of competitive sport relationships with organizations within and without the collegiate sphere of activities. —“The promotion of greater interest in sport parachuting and the diffusion of knowledge con cerning this sport. —To “provide an opportunity for students and faculty of the University to gain experience and find recreation in sport parachuting.” Membership in the club is open to all students and faculty, providing that the applicant has “free-fall” class experience. Interested persons must have already taken the SEARCH sky diving course, or be currently enrolled in it. Jumping is the end result of enrolling in the class. It was reported at the meeting that 52 of the 88 class members for winter term have already made a jump. The instructor, Jim Gilbert, said he expects the others to jump shortly. One advantage of joining club sports for the parachutists would be possible budget assistance from the ASUO Senate, Gilbert said. Becoming a club sport will also facilitate arranging com petitive meets with other schools, he said. A competition with Oregon State University (OSU) is slated in two weeks, and club members said they hope to set up a con tinuing rivalry with Corvallis and then perhaps travel to other meets which are collegiately sanctioned throughout the year. The upcoming meeting with OSU will feature competition at the novice and intermediate levels, Gilbert said. David Jensen was voted Club president and action was taken on revamping an old club con stitution to be submitted to club sports. The parachutists said they plan on convening once monthly and its officers ex pressed hope that the club would attract a large membership. Hie sensitive portraiture of the children has been done by James Maxwell, who is currently studying anthropology at the University. The collection of infant paint ings was made by Alice Pis tor, B.A. Art Education, current M.A. student in Early Childhood Education, as a teacher at the ASUO Child Care Center. Alice worked with Infants aged 6-18 months and developed the “art program” for them. “I have always been interested in children, but through my observation of very young children playing with toys, I became acutely aware of the insatiable appetite very young secure babies have for new ex periences. “Non-toxic paint of various colors and consistencies was part of the material enrichment program.” Also by developing a music program for the infants and by changing the available toys several times each day in con trasting sequences, she managed to shift the mood of the en vironment frequently, in order to maintain a stimulating place for the infants. “Of course one aspect of the infant development program which began to intrigue me more and more was the color-goo exploration which was taking place under the name of Paint ing. Painting left a picture of the child’s exploration patterns, which I ultimately discovered to reveal quite a bit about how the child was feeling that day.” Pistor reported that at first the infant children’s work just looked like a mess, but gradually in dividual “styles” became ap parent. After a while she began to notice certain types of painting being done by children of specific ages. Pistor explained that there is a current fear of the potentially bad effects of an early daycare experience for the really young child. “Whereas we all fear the negative effects of institutional care of the infant on intellectual, emotional and linguistic development of children, I think it is time to look at the experience as one of potentially definite enrichment of the earliest childhood experiences, par ticularly if the parent(s) of the child cannot provide a rich physical environment—a playpen is an example of a dull en vironment—or do not have enormous quantities of time to talk to the child and to sing to him and well, so on.” Jim Maxwell, a member of the Photographers Workshop, first began to take photographs of children when travelling through India and Nepal.
