But the youthful Ducks, loaded at several strokes, free-lanced their way past Washington State 78-35 at Leighton Pool Saturday. Van Rossen put Oregon on an accelerated practice schedule early last week to prepare for the Pac-8 Championships, where he thinks the Ducks will be stirring a few waves. Against the Cougars, he had sprinter Tony Ciochetti swimming the 200-yard butterfly, Gary Devereux taking on the unlikely and demanding butterfly-breastroke double, and freshman Peter Allis with full responsibility in the diving com petition. Ciochetti came up with a lifetime best 2:03.6 to win the butterfly and Devereux took four seconds off his lifetime best in finishing right behind Ciochetti. Veterans Pat McCornack and John Dufficy were diving exhibition, so Allis was left with task of picking up the points. He did, winning the three meter with a 206.06 mark and the one-meter diving with a 191.40. Dufficy, won of diving coach Don McGavern’s big guns, has been out of action most of the season. His return came in the form of an exhibition 317.55 score in three-meter diving and that was good enough to beat the NCAA qualifying standard of 300. The 1000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley were considered key events by Van Rossen. Sophomore Steve Williams of the Ducks beat WSU’s Dave Nix easily—by almost nine seconds—in the 1000 and freshman Roy Clark took the medley race in meet record time. Clark later broke the meet record in the breaststroke. To do it, Clark had to defeat touted John MC Connochie, the Cougars’ sophomore from New Zealand. His 2:02.76 time broke the old record set by Ducks’ Jerry Newman and Bob Girvin two years ago. The Ducks’ medley relay team of Rick Basford, Matt McCudden, John Topar, and John Heilman shaved two seconds off the old meet record with a 3:42.50 clocling. Women gain split with Oregon State Oregon women’s basketball teams split games with Oregon State opponents last Thursday. The Oregon A team lost 33 to 46 but the B team won 36 to 30. Thursdays games were the first of two meetings the teams will have. Becky Racicot led the Oregon A team’s losing effort with 12 points. Sally Mclnturff followed with 7. Kathy Park scored 14 points for OSU. Carol James led the Oregon B team in its third win of the season with 10 points. Michelle Skinner had 8. Marilyn Wilson was top scorer for OSU with 13. Today the Oregon A team plays against a Portland AAU team in Gerlinger Hall. The B team meets Lane Community.
