Photo by Steve Twedt BECKY HANSON, BECKY RACICOT REBOUND OCE rallies, wins 3 7-33 Oregon College of Education burst alive for nine points during the final minutes of the game to defeat Oregon 37 to 33 in women’s basketball Friday night. Four of those final points came from successful free throws. Linda Goodman led her OCE A team with 15 points; Becky Hanson had the same number for Oregon. Karen Banks was second in scoring for Oregon with 8. Over 100 spectators watched the game in Gerlinger Hall. It was Oregon’s first league game for the season. The Oregon B team also lost to its OCE opponent 39 to 29. The Oregon squad came within four points during the third quarter, but again an OCE scoring run kept Oregon from a win. Paula Meatrich scores 16 points for OCE’s B team. Sandy Aikins had 8 points for Oregon. Both the Oregon A and B teams will have second chances against OCE this week. The teams meet at OCE Thursday night. Friday night both teams play at home again-this time against Portland Sate University. The B teams play at 6:30 p.m.; the A game begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free to all women’s basketball games. Thomson’s pin sparks matmen past Cougars By MERLIN MANN Of the Emerald Freshman Jim Thomson, filling in for injured Mark Purkey at 177 pounds, surprised everyone in Mac Court, including himself last night, in reversing a 10-4 deficit and pinning Gary Butler giving Oregon a 24-15 victory over Washington State. Sophomore sensation Wes Hines nailed down the victory with a pin in one minute in the following match at 190 pounds. Rather than Thompson’s come-from-behind effort, Hines recorded his fourth pin of the dual match season in a more con ventional fashion wracking up a 10-1 lead before leveling Dan Kilgore for the final time. Hines, who rarely doesn’t get an early first round takedown, got it this time in 21 seconds. One half-minute later he owned an 8-0 lead. After Kilgore escaped with 1:13 left in the first round, Hines took him down again and had him pinned exactly one minute after the match had begun. Thomson and Butler battled through the first period on near-even terms, trading near-falls, Butler winding up in the lead 6-4 going into the second round. Butler got another near-fall after a reversal to dominate the scoring (10-4) until Thomson’s key reversal. It came with 58 seconds left in the round and Thomson finished him off with 36 seconds left. Thomson’s win broke a 12-12 team score. The Ducks had to come back from a 12-6 deficit with decisions by Duane Stutzman at 158 pounds (2-0), and Don Evans at 167 pounds (10-7). Washington State jumped out into the lead early when Ric Willoughby was pinned by WSU’s Pacific-8 placer Camie McArthur. Another Duck freshman, Ron Catalani, closed the gap to 6-3 with a 2-1 squeaker in the second match. Oregon is now 8-5 on the season, coming off a disastrous swing into California where the Ducks dropped two out of three matches. More importantly, they lost Mark Purkey. Purkey twisted his already-injured knee trying to escape from a California opponent. Now Purkey could be sidelined until the Pacific-8 tournament late in February. After wrestling four opponents in five days, Oregon gets a rest until hosting Boise State Saturday in Mac Court. Willett may return Gerald Willett, who possibly fractured his right wrist during the Oregon State basketball game last Saturday may get back into the lineup by the time the Ducks meet the Beavers again this Friday in Portland. Coach Dick Harter said Monday that a special cast is being made to allow Willett to play. Whether Willett’s injury just above his right thumb is a broken bone won’t be determined for at least 10 days, when X-rays should determine if calcium deposits are forming. If the injury is a broken bone (navicular fracture), Willett may be out for the entire season. Otherwise Willett will be back at full strength when the soreness subsides. Willett sustained the injury during a fall in the second half of the Pac-8 game Saturday in Corvallis. This week his practice will be hampered by the cast. The special cast isn’t expected to arrive until Friday. And then it must conform to regulations. “He’ll practice one-handed this week,’’ Harter said Monday. “We hope to have the special cast here and OK’d by the rules committee by Friday.” ' -- IM basketball scores Saturday Douglass 76.
