speaks today
on ‘living light’
“Living Light” will be the
subject of a free public lecture
today at the University by
William McElroy, chancellor of
the University of California at
San Diego and one of the world’s
leading authorities on
bioluminescence.
McElroy will speak at 4:30 p.m.
in 123 Science.
Bioluminescence is the
emission of light by living things.
The best-known example is the
firefly, which inhabits every
continent but Antartica.
McElroy was the first to
discover the exact chemical
formula of one of the two
materials which produce light in
the firefly.

Gerlinger complex open during finals
Gerlinger complex will be open for recreation during finals week.
Six areas will be set up for activities including basketball, badminton
and volleyball. The building will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Monday through Friday
Concerts set for tonight, tomorrow
The School of Music will present a Christmas concert at 8 p.m.
tonight in the Music School auditorium. Included in the program will
be the University Chamber Choir; Randolph Bourne and Greg Teeter,
organ; Brass Ensemble; Recorder-Consort; and Chamber Musicians.
Music of the famed Renaissance composer Josquin des Pres will
be performed by the University Consort, directed by Harold Owen in
the Recital Hall of the School of Music at 8 p.m. Friday.
The Consort will sing and perform on recorders, krummhoms,
viola da gamba and a small portative organ. Featured as guest-artist
will be John Hamilton, who will perform excerpts from an organ mass
by Couperin on the new Ahrend pipe organ.
Native American correction
During the past week, the Emerald has misreported the amount of
funding for the University’s Native American Program.
Contrary to reports in last Friday’s and Wednesday’s issues, the
NAP receives no federal funds. Federal money in the amount of $3,000
was offered to the program earlier this fall, but the program’s staff
decided to refuse the money.
The federal money was intended for hiring a tutorial coordinator
who would work with the University’s federally funded Reading and
Study Skills Center. However, “The study skills center was seen by the
program as part of the bureaucracy’’ of filling out evaluations and
forms, “so we turned the money down and hired our own tutorial
director out of our own ASUO funds,” according to Ellen Ha stay, NAP
director.
ASUO Senate meeting tonight
The confirmation of an ASUO Senate president tope the agenda
scheduled for that body’s meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in Room 101 EMU.
Other items on the agenda include seating of the new senators
elected last month, several committee appointments and a fiscal
appropriation for Willamette Student Housing.
Tonight’s meeting will be the last for the ASUO Senate until winter
term.
OSPIRG film correction
An OSPIRG-sponsored movie dealing with mismanagement of
forestry practices in the Mollala River drainage will be shown at 7
p.m. tonight in the EMU.
The Emerald incorrectly reported the night of the film in Wed
nesday’s paper.
“Clear Cut Views,” which was produced by OSPIRG, will be
shown free and is open to the public
Women's studies set planning meeting
Women’s Studies program planning will hold a meeting at 2 p.m.
Dec. 17 at 1893 Villard. For information call 343-7894.
Film history classes rescheduled
‘History of Motion Picture,” a course formerly scheduled in
spring term, has been rescheduled for winter term, according to
Horace Robinson of the theatre area of the Speech Department.
Th 255, which drew an unexpectedly large number of students last
year, will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. in a larger
classroom than before. A second course, “History of Motion Picture in
the Sound Era,” is scheduled for spring term as a continuation of the
winter-term course.
Concert refunds available
Refunds can be obtained starting today for the Mac Davis concert,
which was cancelled because of weather conditions. The refunds will
be available at the EMU main desk until Dec. 14.
