Weekend preview March, homecoming, ‘heavy-duty’ speakers set By GLORIA WROTEN Of the Emerald This weekend is packed with movies and dancing but probably the most important thing you can do for yourself and brothers fighting in the War in Vietnam is to get out and participate in the Oct. 14 coalition against the War. As you know, the Nixon ad ministration is trying to fool the public into believing that the war is on the down swing when we are in fact dropping the greatest number of bombs in the history of the world. The march, which will be conducted on a peaceful basis, will start at 10:30 a.m. from the EMU terrace and the Lane County Fairgrounds, and will proceed to the Mall to hear a Vietnamese speaker. Please attend. In following with tradition, Homecoming will also be taking place this weekend. This year’s theme is “Homecoming ’57”, which will consist of the usual: Football game and a dance. The game will be against Washington State University and will be held at Autzen Stadium 1:30 Saturday. The dance will be held 50’s style — an old theme which is losing its flavor. But nonetheless, if you haven’t been to one of these dances, you should go simply to know how your parents got it on. At the dance, there will be prize money for the best dancers and the best dressers. However you’ll have to go through some hassle in order to participate. First, you have to pick up an application form (can you dig that?) from Don Lee, the director of the Walton Complex. After you do this you must run around to find a Dorm, Fraternity or Sorority to “sponsor” you. Then you have to run back to Lee and inform him that you have a sponsor and you’ve got to run fast because they want only 30 people vying for the $30, $20, and $10 prizes. If you’re not into dancing, your best bet would be to go see a Marx brother flick. The Student Union Against the War is spon soring this event for the usual dollar fee. “San Francisco State Strike” and “Night at the Opera” are the movies that will be shown at 7:00 and 9:30 Saturday at 150 Science. They say that “Opera” is one of the Marx’ Brothers best, so if you’re into the Marx Brothers these flicks are for you. If you’re reading this paper before 9 a m. and you’re a McGovern lover, you should know that the senator will be making a campaign appearance in Portland at noon in front of the Pioneer Post Office, S.W. 6th and Morrison. There’s even a chance that you can get a ride! If you need a ride or have room in your car, contact the McGovern headquarters at 686-0400. If you don’t have a dime to call them, have enough energy to truck on over to where the car-pools are meeting: 9 a m. in front of 150 Science. Ap pearing with them will be Slip pery Hollow and Kathy Smith. They’re only asking a dollar a head, so if you’re not doing anything else, check this out. Special Note for Singing Groups: If you’re in need of money and you have a Band, the best thing you can do for your group is to have it signed up at the ASUO Program Office, room 301 in the Student Union. What the Program office is trying to do is to gather a list of all the available groups, the type of music they play and where they can be reached, so that any one giving a party can know what groups are around for him to choose from. This is just a small way of getting known, so sign up with these people. If you’re into heavy-duty mind probing trips you should check out Eckankar, which is said to be the Ancient Science of Soul Travel. This should be good if this is your first exposure to this trip, and even better if you’ve already been into it for a while. Anyway, its going to be held at 8 p.m. Newman Center, 1850 Emerald Saturday night. To put you in the mood there will be some spiritual music and some heavy-duty art on display. It’s well worth going. If you can’t get into that culture, try this one: Hungarian Folk Dancing in Gerlinger (the music will lead you to the room). Just so that you won’t embarrass yourself, there will be a Begin ning session from 7:30-8:30. For you pros, there will be an in termediate session from 8:30 10:30. Due to everyone’s want of money there will be a 50 cents fee for the Beginner’s session and 75 cents for the whole thing. This is for Sunday; the usual Friday night dancing is free. The Mt. Hood Community College Black Student Union will present the “Soul Masters’’ a rock group from Portland from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday at 257 S.E. Stark St. in Gresham. The University’s Black Stu dents Union is holding a party in Eugene Saturday night for all members. It will be held from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 3257 Willamette St., according to LeFrancis Arnold, BSU president. It seems that the only thing I can offer you is movies or dan cing, but add this to the list. You all know who W.C. Fields is right? Well, the very first flick that he ever starred “Pool Sharks” will be shown at the Way Inn, 1332 Kincaid along with “If I had a Million” which he also stars in. That’s not all, if you’re a Chaplin Freak, all the more reason why you should go to this place. “By the Sea” will also be showing. And last, but not least, food will also be made available FREE so bring your pals. PS: They’ll accept any donation. Getting back to spiritual trips, Dadagii, a spiritual teacher of Ananda Marga Yoga Society, will speak in the EMU tonight at 7:30. The room will by posted later today. The topic will be “Yoga and Meditation.” It’s free. If you miss the talk, be around the EMU tomorrow at 2:00 when Dadagii will be teaching a class in Hatha Yoga (exercises and Yoga Philosophy. The room will be posted. Both of these events sound heavy-duty so you should check into it. Remember: It’s free. The first Symposium on Wilderness and Human Con sciousness will be taking place throughout today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Gerlinger. A new coffeehouse and theater will open tonight at Scarborough Faire. It features a full vegetarian menu, live music and dancing. Scarborough Faire is located at 136 E. 11th. If you are still left with nothing to do, crawl in a corner and read Zap Comics or wait until the next weekend review.
