Photo by James Link Pat McCornack Though young, tankers, divers experienced By DAVE HARMS Of the Emerald Usually in college sports, a young team made up of mostly fresh men and sophomores means inexperience. The 1972-73 versions of the Oregon swimming and diving teams are an exception to that rule. Oregon has had one of its best recruiting years ever for swim ming, according to diving coach Don McGavem. The Ducks have added eight high school All-Americans to the list of those recruited for this year, and have 14 non-recruited “walk ons" out for the team. This is in addition to a sophomore dominated returning team which finished sixth in the Pacific-8 and a respectable 17th in the NCAA cham pionships last year. i Lost because of graduation from last year’s team are two swimmers the Ducks will be hard pressed to replace—co-captains Mike Dirksen and Pat O’Malley. O’Malley is the school record holder in the 400 yard individual medley, and Dirksen is an All-American, former NCAA champion and school record holder in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke. Even with the personnel losses, swimming coach Don Van Rossen will have plenty of talent available. Returning this year are: —Sophomore Tony Ciochetti, the school record holder in the 200 yard freestyle and a freestyle sprinter capable of competing at distances from 50 to 500 yards. —Sophomore Gary Hidle, who holds the school record in the 200 yard butterfly. —Sophomores Rick Basford and Jon Ramey, co-holders of an Oregon school record in the backstroke. —Sophomore Ron Bonaparte, who was a state breaststroke champion and All-American in Colorado, and is the best hope to replace Mike Dirksen. —Sophomore Steve Williams, a specialist in the 1000 and 1650 yard freestyle. While the Oregon swimmers were earning sixth place last year in the Pac-8, the Duck divers were continuing on their winning ways. They chalked up their seventh consecutive Pac-8 team championship. However, with the graduation of two seniors from last year’s team and the loss of last year’s freshman star Jay Lerew because of disciplinary reasons, the diving team will have to depend on the younger prospects. Two of the stalwarts who will be expected to carry much of the load this year are: —John Dufficy, a sophomore and former high school state champion from Denver, Col., who placed second in the 3 meter diving event at the Pac-8 championships last year. —Pat McCornack, a junior, and a former three-time Oregon state champion and three-time high school All-American from South Eugene High School. He finished fifth in the Pac-8 as a freshman. Exact dates for this year’s swimming and diving schedule are not yet available, but the list of opponents is. Home meets at Leighton Pool include dual meets with Stanford, Washington State and Oregon State, while in just one meet away from Eugene, the Ducks will meet Utah, BYU, Colorado State, the University of Denver and the University of Colorado. The Northern Division meet is in Seattle, the Pac-8 in Santa Monica, Calif., and the NCAA championships are set for the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Krause adds James to staff II Mel Krause, University of Oregon baseball coach, has added Jeff James, former pitcher with the Eugene Emeralds, to his coaching staff for the coming school year. James, 32, graduated from Indiana State University this past school year with a B.S. degree in Physical Education. While at Oregon, he will be working on his Master’s degree in Physical Education. James was a member of the Emeralds' staff in the Pacific Coast League in 1969 and 1970. James also had major league experience with the Philadelphia Phillies. James played a total of 13 years of professional baseball, II mostly in the Phillies organization. Krause indicates James will be in charge of the Ducks’ junior varsity team. Gordon Knutson will remain on the staff as Krause’s assistant. Knutson, 28, is also a former Emerald pitcher and member of the Phillies organization. h)OM£ op pVLaGH 30-|UJlMU SiJ o’? , ^ jgy &V6^ ■t> X, ^4-5 6peeqs 5V.V V.V-l is' 00(2 ■ • ■ » ■ - ■ » ■ ■ ■ » ■ CYCLC CCUTK; 4-*peo £x\o*p f^flrnjeikJG fwc nvie'^t' (O £>p«te5.t=>-3 flUP pgo F C65«0 (i^L eaoipMeiaT »“Go^ A(0OUUO -fM& \UDRLO • ■ H w M H BkJ etJOeME: 31KJC£ HZT/ >M* 1 TVslG [ EXOfOLtL yiQKJz: eg wh 3^«e»^ j
