I I Serving the tired and troubled By MIKKMcKEEVER Of the Emerald Eugene offers a number of services for the tired, the con fused, the troubled, and the en vironmentalist. These services come in the form of organizations such as Whitebird Clinic, Switchboard, Youth Hostel, Shelter House and BRING. BRING stands for Begin Recycling in Natural Groups, which should give some hints about what the organization is. Specifically, it was set up a little over a year ago as an educator and initiator of local recycling. The BRING warehouse is located on Seavey Loop Road, across Interstate 5, northwest of Lane Community College. It is here that its glasscrusher does its work, and other products like aluminum, metal, cardboard, paper and newspapers are recycled. The warehouse is not the only place one can come in contact with BRING, however. This summer a truck was placed periodically at locations where there were lots of people. Ap propriately named the BRING mobile. this truck's purpose was to act as a depository for anyone and everyone's recyclable waste material. Three times this summer the BRING-mobile showed its face. After that it had to postpone any future stops for awhile. The BRING-mobile was so successful the warehouse was backed up to its ears in recyelables. Since that time things have changed a little at BRING. Several measures have been taken to improve efficiency at the warehouse. So much that for fall they plan to place the BRING mobile once a month at four different locations. They need volunteers to work part-time on Saturdays and Sundays. BRING would like to stress two things for those bringing materials to the warehouse to be recycled. All caps and metal rings should be removed from the bottles and all cans should be flattened. This fall BRING is also accepting ledger paper, a practice that the Survival Center, located on campus, also employs. All paper taken to BRING should be sorted into piles of white and colored sheets. The warehouse acts as a middleman between local people and companies which process the material. For instance, BRING takes 24 barrels of broken glass to Owens Illinois Co. in Portland three times a week That com pany then melts down the glass to make new bottles. One way to become acquainted with the hows and whys of this organization is to attend its public meetings. On the first and third Thursday of every month a public meeting is held at the Central Presbyterian Church, located at 15th and Ferry. At these meetings decisions are made regarding future plans for the organization, and general (Continued on Page 21) The Good Ship Earth 539 E. 13th By Campus Far Out Hand Made Clothes, Body Bar Products, Ecological, Per sonality Stationery, Herb Pots, Puppets, Candles, Imports, Muslin Shirts. -''fJATURM FOOD STORE 74A t iA**' 3A3-TM2. r i n «**»** Cans must bo stomped before recycled.
