University committees, duties, chairers listed Following is a list of University-wide ad ministrative and faculty committees, including the name of the chairer and the charge to the com mittee. Further information as to the membership and activities can be obtained by contacting the chairer or the University President’s office. Academic Distinction—Charles R.B. Wright To develop policies and procedures for the identification of students for University recognition for academic distinction, to assist the Registrar in selecting such students, to advise the Registrar on the preparation of a list of students for the use of the selection committee-of honorary societies. Academic Grievance—Donald R. Truax, pro tern To receive complaints or grievances against faculty members arising out of their responsibilities as officers of the institution, to investigate and review these complaints or grievances on an in formal basis, affording full opportunity to the concerned faculty member to be heard, to attempt to resolve differences or adjust grievances in an amicable fashion consistent with the understanding of the parties and the best interests of the Univer sity, and to issue such findings and recom mendations to the President (furnishing copies to the persons concerned) as appear appropriate under the circumstances. Academic Occasions—George Hodge To plan Commencement and Graduation Con vocation exercises and other Commencement events and the annual observance of Charter Dqy. Academic Requirements—Jack Sanders Administration and interpretation of academic requirements for baccalaureate degrees and for action on student petitions for exceptions to these requirements and other academic regulations. It has no jurisdiction over regulations governing graduate degrees. Also, to gather data and observe the effects of academic regulations and to present its findings and recommendations to the faculty. Academic Standards—Donald Tull, pro tern To advise faculty and the President and to make recommendations where appropriate, on those matters which pertain to die maintenance of academic standards and integrity at the University. Admissions Policy—George Dawson To advise the faculty and the President on all matters relating to admissions policies and procedures of the University. Advising—Robert Albrecht, pro tern To make recommendations for appointments of freshmen advisers, after consultation with deans and department heads concerned, organize and direct the work of freshmen advisers, consult with deans and department heads in transferring the students from freshmen to major advisers and in seeking to effect the proper integration of the students’ study programs, plan and conduct for advisers and advisees all meetings necessary to carry out effectively the advising and registration procedure. Advisory Committee to the Registrar—V.L. Barkhurst, pro tern Assembly and University Lectures—Alfred Rubin, pro tern Arrangement of assembly programs and ad dresses under the University lectures program. Campus Planning—Charles R. Wright Long-range development of the campus, creation of a ten-year campus plan, locating sites for par ticular structures, architectural integrity of areas of the campus, landscaping of the campus, iden tification of problems and needs of traffic and transportation, parking needs and problems, determination of parking fees, choice of architects for development of particular campus structures. Campus Recreation Coordinating—Gary Bartlett Computing Center advisory—Doug Olson, pro tern Continuing Education liaison—Thomas Dahle To serve as an advisory body and medium of communication concerning policies and programs of the Division of Continuing Education involving work in University fields. Curriculum—Roland Ball (1) Screening of all proposals for course changes and new curricula and degrees from the minor faculties of the several schools, and report of its recommendations to the University faculty through the Faculty Senate; (2) advice to the University editor on the content and structure of the University Catalog; (3) participation, on behalf of the University faculty, in planning the development and improvement of the instructional program of the institution, in consultation with the President and other administrative officials of the University; (4) the continuing study and review of existing courses and curricula, and the presentation of recom mendations for revision to deans, department heads, and minor faculties; (5) advice and assistance to schools and departments in the planning of new programs, with special attention to the relation of such programs to general cirricular and academic policies of the University and to overall plans for the development of its in structional program. The committee has final power for the approval of certain specified types of minor course changes and for one-year approval of summer-session and extension courses; by custom, the committee has also assumed final power for emergency one-year approval of course changes for the regular sessions. (Pinal power means power to act for the faculty; committee actions are subject to confirmation by the President and the Chancellor.) Development Fund advisory—Robert Mazo, pro tern Distinguished Service Awards—Robert Clark, pro tern Selection committee for annual University awards for Distinguished Service; selection of committee is approved by Faculty Senate. Educational and Experimental Innovations and Improvements—Harry Alpert, pro tern To initiate and administer a program of grants to faculty members for the encouragement of research and development in educational ex perimentation, innovation, and improvement; to stimulate and promote experimentation ... in all schools and departments; to maintain liaison with the Committee on the Curriculum, the Graduate Council, and other faculty and administrative bodies on matters of educational development; to initiate and sponsor the securing of extramural funds for die support of educational ex perimentation . . .; to consult with student groups and students individually regarding educational development; to maintain, through the Office of Planning and Institutional Research, an inventory of significant experimental . . . activities and to evaluate the appropriateness of such educational experimentation ... for the University. Educational Opportunity—John Sherwood (a) Review of the experience of educational op portunity programs at other institutions of higher education with the objective of applying the best known practices at the University of Oregon, (b) Study and evaluation of existing educational op portunity programs at the University of Oregon and, until further notice, report on them to the faculty in writing at least annually, (c) Review of proposals for program expansions and for new programs in the areas of educational opportunity. (d) Development of recommendations on sources of finance, and provision of technical assistance in the development of applications for financial support. (e) Maintenance of liaison with appropriate in terested persons and groups, including faculty committees with related interests, the Office of Minority Relations, and the Associated Students of the University of Oregon. Equal Employment Opportunity—Luise Walker To advise the President and other personnel of ficers of the University on practices and procedures that would insure the proper execution of the University’s equal employment opportunity policy. Ethnic Studies—Paul Simonds To advise the faculty and the President on the prompt development of ethnic studies at the University through an institute or other means. Festival of the Arts—Adell McMillan To plan and administer the annual Festival of the Arts. Foreign Study Program—Warren Brown (a) To review regularly and to approve the academic standards of organized foreign study programs now associated with the University for the continued granting of academic credit; (b) to establish policy, to evaluate, and to make recom mendations to the faculty, through the Faculty Senate, regarding the approval of programs proposed in the future, before transfer of credit is accepted. The committee is instructed to follow generally the academic standards set forth in “Guidelines for Foreign Study Programs of the Oregon State System of Higher Education,” with revisions or supplements when necessary. Higher Education Study—Bill Wyatt, pro tern Human Research Review Intercollegiate Athletics—Robert Bowlin To make recommendations concerning all aspects of intercollegiate policy at the University, either upon its own initiative or at the request of the President. Library—Perry Powers To act as an advisory committee on library af fairs. Medical Technology—Bayard McConnaughey To assume administrative authority over Sacred Heart School of Medical Technology credit program. New Student Orientation—Shirley Wilson (1) To plan and recommend to the President of the University specific programs for new student orientation. (2) To advise the Executive Secretary of the Committee on the implementation of the new student orientation programs.
