vironment makes Crater Lake a
truly unusual natural
phenomenon.
The lake was formed by the
great eruption of Mt. Mazama
long ago. The crater of this
volcano became Crater Lake.
The crater is almost round,
covering 21 square miles.
Towering walls of rock make a
sheer drop into the lake, and in
the middle of the lake is the
inactive cone of the volcano,
known as Wizard Island.
The lake is one of the Nor
thwest’s most popular recreation
areas. There are many trails
around the lake, varying in
length from short walks to hikes
of many miles.
Crater Lake park is full of
Blacktail and Rocky Mountain
Mule deer. Elk and cougars have
been seen, and squirrels, chip
munks, marmot and cony are in
abundance. Black bear are
common and are very rarely
known to cause any trouble to
campers.
The lake is stocked with
rainbow trout and kokane
salmon. No fishing license is
required and boats are available
for rental.
The lake is a constant tem
perature, furnished with water
only by the mdting shows around
it. Crater Lake plunges to depths
of 1.932 feet.
