Sargent Shriver, the Kennedy in-law, former Peace Corps director and onetime am bassador to France named by McGovern Saturday, was closeted with top McGovern aides most of Sunday in what amounted to a one-day lesson on how to be a vice presidential nominee. Meeting The 56-year-old Shriver, who has never held elective office, flew to Washington late Saturday night after McGovern went on a national television and radio hookup to announce his choice of a successor to vice presidential nominee Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri. McGovern and Shriver met that night at the home of Henry Kimelman, McGovern’s finance director. McGovern and Shriver were expected to have little to say publicly about their plans pen ding the necessary endorsement of McGovern’s choice by the Democratic National Committee meeting here Tuesday. Eagleton withdrew early last week following disclosure that he had been a psychiatric patient in the early and mid-1960's. The South Dakota Senator then spent the next five days asking fellow liberal Democratic senators to be his running mate and getting “no” for an answer. Md.. for the meeting Sunday were Frank Mankiewicz, McGovern’s national political director. Gary Hart. McGovern’s campaign manager, assistant press secretary Kirby Jones and reportedly Ted Van Dyke, McGovern's "issues man.” Crash course It would presumably be Van Dyke’s job to give Shriver a crash course on where McGovern stands on the issues so Shriver can avoid °nying anything em barrassingly contradictory to McGovern in public. But the Republicans already were taking advantage of what they see as discrepancies in the records of McGovern and Shriver Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird noted Shriver had stayed on as ambassador to France after President Nixon took office in 1969 Shriver, Laird said, “ap proved the Vietnamization program” of Nixon. McGovern long has opposed U.S. involvement in what he considers a civil war in Vietnam. Much of his early support for the presidential nomination grew from that stand McGovern emerged from his house late Sunday morning with his wife Eleanor and said they were going to meet friends and he planned to play some tennis. McGovern, wearing tennis clothes, conceded to newsmen the withdrawal of Eagleton and the subsequent search for a replacement has set back their campaign “We know we have to come from behind,” he said. “I feel Porter OK’s single debate Democratic congressional candidate Charles Porter of Kugene has agreed to meet his Republican opponent, Congressman John Dellenback, in a single debate in Roseburg this fall Porter said he accepted Dellenback’s idea of the Roseburg debate only because Dellenback refused to accept Porter’s challenge of a series of debates around the Fourth District. Porter is also asking Dellen back to agree to only spend $25,000 each on their campaigns Porter claims Dellenback has spent a total of $159,000 in each of his three congressional cam paigns, more than 2' a times what his Democratic opponents have spent. Porter claims that more debates will reduce the need for advertising and permit voters to hear about the issues directly, not “as they are distorted by the tinsel and hokum of advertising ” The main issue in the. cam paign, said Porter, will be Dellenback’s record in office. Dellenback has not replied yet to Porter’s campaign spending limitation proposal we're about where we were in February at the beginning of the New Hampshire primary. We've got to come from behind ” But both he and Shriver feel very good about it, McGovern said in predicting a Democratic triumph in November. McGovern ‘glad* Asked whether he’s glad to have the vice presidential selection finally settled, McGovern said "I surely am.” Democrats continued responding favorably Sunday to Shriver's selection. Shriver said Sunday that Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has pledged the Democratic ticket his full and unqualified support "lie said he’d do anything he could for us,” Shriver told newsmen, whom he had invited onto his estate. He said he fully expects Daley to exercise his full political in fluence in behalf of the Democratic ticket, adding that he thinks Daley will meet with him and McGovern in the relatively near future Daley approved Shriver’s selection in a statement Saturday night and earlier he had said he would support all Democratic candidates in November. But the fact that his delegates were barred from the Miami convention partly through the efforts of McGovern followers had raised doubts among some Democrats about how wholeheartedly Daley would support the Democratic presidential ticket with his strong Chicago organization. Shriver disclosed also that McGovern had telephoned him late last week after the vice presidential nomination had already been offered to Muskie. “He wanted tc find out if I would take it if Muskie should refuse,” Shriver said “1 said I certainly would.” Shriver said also he assured McGovern there is nothing in his past that would embarrass the candidate or the party. ‘Skeletal’ support “If there are any skeletons in my closet,” Shriver said jokingly as he munched on a hamburger, “I hope I can win itheir full support too ” Rep Ken Hechler, D-W.Va., and one of the leading boosters in the House for Shriver’s nomination, said Sunday "he is a tremendous salesman for Democratic ideas.” Shriver, Hechler said, “will bridge the gap between the old and new politics.” Cliff Larson, the Iowa Democratic chairman, said Siui>v.. 's background in business as assistant general manager of Chicago’s huge Merchandise Mart from 1948 1961 and his experience as director in the 1960s of the Peace Corps and Office of Kcnomic Opportunity “have prepared him for this high executive office."
