Six University faculty to retire this month Six members of the University faculty will retire at the end of this month. They are Harrison Clarke and Louis Bellisimo, School of Health. Education and Recreation; Edmund Cykler, School of Music; David Dougherty, Carl Johnson, and Chandler Beall, department of romance languages. Clarke, research prrfessor of physical education, has been at the University since 1953. He has done research at the University on physical development and growth of youth, and is recognized throughout the nation for his expertise on physical fitness. Bellisimo has been at the University since 1950. He is regarded as an expert on bowling, and the varsity bowling teams he coached have won the national college championship 12 times in 16 years. He has con ducted many workshops to teach instructors how to teach bowling. Twelve hundred or more students have been under his direction each year at the University. Although Edmund Cykler says that “Teaching keeps you young—it keeps you from becoming an old fogey,” he is retiring after 25 years in the School of Music. He plans to work on research in comparative music education methods in European countries. After his retirement, Cykler and his wife will go to Germany for research in music education and then to Tunesia, Africa for the 10th Conference of the In ternational Society for Music Education. Dougherty has taught French at the University since 1947, first teaching in the department of foreign languages. When the department was divided, he headed the romance languages department from 1967-69. He was one of the founders, in 1950, of the Northwest Conference of Foreign Language Teachers. From 1966-70 he was president of the American Association of Teachers of French, and has served as president of the Philological Association of the Pacific Coast. He is the co-author of three books on French literature. Johnson has been at the University since 1935. He has written two French textbooks and has served as president of the Northwest Pacific chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French. During the next few years, he plans to write interpretation of several of Baudelaire’s poems. Beall, professor emeritus of romance languages, is the founder of the Comparative Literature journal, which is published by the University and circulated in 67 countries. Beall came to Oregon in 1929, after teaching at four other schools. He has served on many University faculty committees, including the Advisory Council and the Faculty Senate. From 1961-71 he was director of the University’s graduate Com parative Literature Program. He is the author of two books and several articles. For retirement, he plans to travel, read and continue research and writing. [ Briefs MEChA will hold its regular general meeting today in the EMU.
