Amazon rent raise
needed, says official
Should rent for the University’s Amazon married student housing
project increase by 25 per cent next year from the current rate of
$42.50 a month?
A newly formed union of Amazon housing tenants, claiming 80 per
cent membership, says no.
H P. Barnhart, director of University Housing, says that not only
should it be increased, but that such an increase is necessary.
The new union, called Amazon Cooperating Tenants (ACT), first
met May 11.
In a letter dated Tuesday, written by ACT representatives to Gerald
Bogen, vice president for student services, ACT requested that the
proposed rent increase be withdrawn by the University. (The
proposed increase comes before the finance committee of the State
Board of Higher Education June 26-27 for consideration.)
ACT’s letter said, “To date, no valid, substantiated reasons for the
proposed rent increase have been provided.”
Barnhart, contacted Wednesday, said, in response to the letter, that
the possibility of an increase “was fully explored by a representative
committee,” the Housing Governance Committee, and that there is
“no possibility” of the University withdrawing its request for a rent
increase.
“We have been losing money on the operation of Amazon for the past
three or four years,” Barnhart said. “There is no question that an
increase is warranted.”

The Social Action groups, in
conjunction with Joseph
Allman’s Community Problem
Solving class, developed a
community survey procedure to
“ascertain local citizen opinions
in relation” to some of the most
controversial aspects of the mall
regulations resolution. Also the
citizens were to be asked for
‘ possible alternatives to present
policies regarding the use of the
mall ”
During the survey, 42 down
town businessmen (about one
third of the members of the
Eugene Downtown Association)
and 276 citizens were selected in a
random sample. The subjects
were asked questions such as:
how often had they gone to the
mall in the past month (in
comparison to the number of
trips to Valley River Center),
what the main reasons were to go
to the Mall, how they got to the
mall, and what changes could be
made that would bring them
downtown more often.
In suggestions for different
uses of the Mall, 90.5 per cent of
the businessmen and 80.8 per cent
of the other persons said they
would like to see more displays or
exhibits.
