On Campus Credit possible for Italy summer term This year, for the first time, students will be able to receive University credit for attending the summer session at the Italian University for Foreigners at Perugia, Italy. All courses are taught in Italian by Italian professors and include Italian language, literature, history, philosophy, drama, art and music. Undergraduate students, who must have a “B” average to enroll, may earn 8-12 quarter hours of credit at the University. This year is the first year the University has participated, although the Italian University for Foreigners was established in 1921, and each summer enrolls more than 7,000 students from throughout the world. About 500 of this number are from the United States. According to Sylvia Giustina, University instructor in Italian who is coordinating the program, beginning students in Italian will be accepted, but those with a previous knowledge of the language have a wider range of courses from which to choose. Cost for tuition and fees is $180. Individual students arrange for their own travel, and for room and board. Students will be helped to locate lodgings from a list made available by the Italian University. Applications should be submitted before April 20 to Sylvia Giustina. Shakespeare Festival director to speak Dr Gerry Turner, producer-director of the Oregon Shakes pere Festival in Ashland, will give a lecture today at the University. Turner’s lecture will be at 8 p.m. in the EMU. His topic will be Shakespere’s “Troilus and Cressida,” which he will direct this summer for the festival. Turner was chairman of the Department of Drama and Speech at the University of California, Riverside, from 1967 to 1970. During the 1970-71 academic year he was a Humanities Fellow in Sweden, where he studied the student and reperatory companies at the Malmo Civic Theatre. Other areas in which Turner has wor ked are the study of Ingmar Bergman’s theater work and the translation of a number of Swedish plays into English. Among the Shakespearean plays which Turner has directed are “Julius Caesar,” “Anthony and Cleopatra,” and “As You Like It.” Spelling correction The bill to place the future of incidental fee support to the Athletic Department before students in the ASUO spring term election was sponsored by Senator Roger Vavrosky. Vavrosky’s name was misspelled in Friday’s Emerald report on the ASUO Senate meeting. Three receive Art Annual Awards Purchase awards from the 12th Annual Pacific Northwest Art Annual of the EMU at the University have been made to Demetrios Jameson, David Me Cosh, and Vernon Witham. The three pruchases are from works by 55 artists of the Pacific Northwest, including Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia and Alberta, Canada. The purchased paintings now become a part of the EMU’s permanent collection. The Pacific Northwest Art Annual, an invitational exhibit, was established 12 years ago by the EMU as an art acquisition program for works in various media by Northwest artists. The purchased works are prominently displayed in the EMU. The media chosen for the 1972 Pacific Northwest Art Annual are oil and acrylic painting. The paintings in the Art Annual exhibition will go on display in the Art Gallery and second floor lobby of the EMU today and will be up through May 5. University Feminist meeting slated “What is. or what can be, the place of the ASUO in making some needed changes on campus?" That’s one question the University Feminists will ask candidates for ASUO executive and senatorial positions at the Feminists’ scheduled meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the EMU. “We are inviting all ASUO candidates to attend,” says University Feminists’ member Kathy Blago. All women are also invited, she says. “It will be an attempt to find candidates who we, as women, can endorse.“she says. “All kinds of issues" will be discussed at the meeting, including funding of programs at the University to eliminate sexism and racism, and day care centers. The meeting will consist of "issues, not personalities." she says. University publication used as journal The Canadian Comparative Literature Association has adopted the University-published Comparative Literature as its official journal, which will be sent to all members. Comparative Literature, quarterly published by the University in cooperation with the comparative literature section of the Modern Language Association of America, has been edited since its 1949 founding by Dr Chandler B Beall.
