Committee
formed
to select
new coach
The University formed another committee this weekend, but this
one might be one of the most unique college committees in the country.
The committee will be an administration-student committee
formed to participate in the selection of a new head football coach. It
holds its first meeting this morning.
ASIJO President Iain More proposed the idea of such a committee
to Athletic Department head, Norv Ritchey, as an attempt to get the
ASUO involved in the coach-selection process.
Ritchey said that the membership of the committee had not been
finalized, but that Dean Robert Bowlin, head of the intercollegiate
athletic committee, would be chairman. "I think Bowlin has invited a
number of people to the meeting. I think, that at the meeting, the
composition of the committee wil be desided,” Ritchey said.
More admitted the committee, which will be composed of ad
ministration figures, members of the football team and students, is an
unusual method of selecting a coach.
More indicated that he and Ritchey had agreed to aim for next
Monday as final date to make a selection.

State Board to meet
The on-going financial emergency will be the main topic of
discussion when the State Board of Higher Education meets today in
Portland.
The Board will hear progress reports from individual schools in
the system pertaining to budget cuts made necessary by projected
state deficits.
In other business the Board will hear reports on married student
housing and tuition policies.
A public hearing has also been scheduled on proposed changes in
the Board’s investment and endowment procedures.
The meeting begins at 9 a m. in the Michael Smith Memorial
Center on the Portland State University campus.
Sprague named association head
Vernon Sprague, head of the Department of Physical Education
for Men at the University, has been named president-elect of the
National College Physical Education Association for Men.
He was elected at the group’s 75th Annual Conference, held Jan. 9
through 12 in New Orleans, La. Sprague will serve as president of the
NCPEA for the 1973-74 academic year.
Sprague, who has been at the University since 1946, has been
active in the NCPEA since 1952. During this period, he has served as
an officer and member of working committees. He has been a
member of the Executive Council for the past year and will continue in
that position until 1974. He has also been active in the American
Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and other
professional associations.
Gravel to speak on campus
U.S. Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska), will tour Oregon today through
Friday with a scheduled stop at the University Thursday.
Gravel will be in Oregon to campaign for the presidential can
didacy of Sen. Edmund Muskie (D-Maine).
While in Eugene, Gravel will speak to a political science class at
Lane Community College at 9 a m., the full student body at 10 a.m.,
and hold a news conference at 11 a.m. before speaking to the Lane
Demo Forum.
In the afternoon he will address a University audience at 3 p m in
the EMU Ballroom.
Gravel was elected to the Senate in 1968 after defeating incumbent
Sen. Ernest Gruening in the primary.
Speech student voted best all around
Sometimes it’s the little things which mean the most. And one
small award will probably be one of Jim DeWitt’s best memories of his
college career, because it reflects the esteem of his classmates.
Jim, a University senior speech major, was voted the best all
around student in one of his speech classes. Criterion for the selection
was the person who not only did the best technically, but who the
students felt they had learned the most from, and who had contributed
most to the class.
The subject of the course, taught by Bower Aly, was History and
Criticism of American Speeches. So as a memento of his achievement,
DeWitt was presented with a copy of a book on speechmaking along
the Missouri frontier, “Stump, Bar and Pulpit” by Frances McCurdy.
The book, donated by Barre Toelken, professor of English at the
University, was presented in a small ceremony on Jan. 14. Another
member of the class, Herb Cawthorne made the presentation.
Cadets to attend conference
Army ROTC Cadet William Nelson and Air Force ROTC Cadet
Douglas Welch from the Department of Military Science and
Aerospace Studies of the University, have been selected to attend the
50th Annual Reserve Officers’ Association (ROA) Conference.
This conference will be the first in which a large number of 250
ROTC cadets will participate These cadets have been selected to
attend the Department of Defense and ROA two-day conference on
Feb. 24 and 25 in Washington, D.C.
Representing the various ROTC detachments on the college and
university campuses of the nation, the students will come together to
exchange views with such national leaders as Defense Secretary
Melvin Laird, members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and
the national officers of ROA.

University Music Association concert are available at the EMU Main
Desk The concert will feature the Israel Chamber Orchestra, and will
beheld at 8 p in Thursday in McArthur Court. The tickets are limited
to one per student, and Student I.D. is required. Tickets at $1.00 each
