It is the last day for former students to drop courses without having the withdrawal noted on their records. First term new students may (hop courses through Friday, Feb. 4, without the courses being recorded. After the dates listed above, courses may be dropped through Friday, Feb. 25, however, a “W” will be recorded. Phi Beta Kappa elects members The University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, national scholastic society, has announced election of members from the 1970-71 senior class. Previously, Phi Beta Kappa has held elections during the spring term from eligible members of the senior class graduating each June. However, effective with the 1970-71 academic year, by faculty action the University adopted a grading system in which grade point averages are no longer computed. Phi Beta Kappa has based their preliminary identification of candidates on grade point averages. The modification of the grading system made it difficult for the membership committee of Phi Beta Kappa to identify eligible can didates within the time limits previously established. During the summer, candidates were identified and this fall’s selections were made from those candidates. The same problem of timing makes it impossible to select the Senior Twelve this fall. The faculty has appointed an ad hoc faculty-student committee, the Academic Distinctions Policy Committee, to identify procedures for the recognition of academic distinctions. That committee has not reported at this time. Annual BRING meeting set tonight The annual public meeting of BRING (Begin Recycling In Natural I Groups) will be held at 7:30 tonight in the Central Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 15th Ave. andFerry St. in Eugene. Topics for discussion include a review of last year’s operation, future plans, budgets and election of officers. Student wives group to meet Thursdays A discussion group for University student wives will be held, starting today, during Winter Term. The group, which will discuss problems of student wives as well as community concerns and sharing of ideas, will meet on Thursdays each week from 9:30 to 11 a m. for an eight-week period. Sessions will be held at the YMCA, 2055 Patterson, and baby sit ting service will be available. A small fee will be charged for use of the UMCAroom. Dr. Carol Kelly, psychologist in the University of Oregon Coun seling Center, will lead the group. For additional information, telephone Dr. Kelly at 686-3227 or 746-3274. Woodwind Quintet to perform A recital of three works from the classic and contemporary periods are on the program of the University Woodwind Quintet scheduled for tonight. The performance will be at 8 p.m. in the School of Music Recital Hall. There is no admission charge for the concert. Youth rec project topic of slide show The Eugene Group of the Sierra Club and the University Outdoor Program will present an audio-visual slide show entitled “Inner City Wilderness Project” today at 7:30 p.m. It will be held in Com monwealth Hall, room 138. Debaters to define Zionism Arab and Israeli students will debate “The Nature of Zionism " at 12 30 this afternoon in the EMU. The room will be announced. The debaters intend to define Zionism and its part in the recurring conflict n the Middle East On Friday, the program will be presented in 223 and 224 — Apprenticeship. Lane Community College, at 12:30 pm. Panel to discuss traveler’s problems The Cosmopolitan Club is sponsoring a panel discussion on the problems of foreign students and travelers throughout the world.
