OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR Governor Tom McCall State Capital Building Salem, Oregon Re: Request for appointment as Oregon’s Ombudsman. Governor McCall: COMES NOW John Miller (Jim) Reed, with direct application, in request for appointment as Oregon’s Ombudsman — a position reated by executive order in July 1969 and now being vacated by -Mario Haggard. You may recall that I suggested the establishment of an Oregon Ombudsman Office, by executive order, and my letters of complaint, when the office took the form of a meaningless public passifier, without power or authority to sanction government agency staff procrastination or their public precuding “procedures.” ' You may also remember me as a 1971 Lane County Republican candidate for State Represen tative, Position Number Five; winning the Primary, but ‘unsuccessfull’ with an $85.00 General Election attempt.and most important: You may agree that my rhetoric, and ACTION, has been that of a tough minded advocate of public, rather than monied interest, causes. For particulars, I draw your attention to the 1971 Voter’s Pamphlet and the various written or oral issues I have developed in the name of MEANINGFUL “PROGRESS” and “REFORM ” You may find me “unfit” for the position in question because I have found fault with political party methologies, that insulate Republican and Democratic Party cliques, but certainly you cannot rdeny my driving energy or intellect. 1 I ask you now for the appointment as Oregon’s Ombudsman because I sincerely believe that by force of personality I might turn said office into an effective public tool. At any event, if I’m unable to get the job done . .. you may be sure no one else will be able to. Rod McKuen will perform for two hours, beginning at 8:15 p.m., Saturday night at the Portland Civic Auditorium. Tickets are still available for $4, $5, and $6, and can be purchased at Celebrity Attractions, the PSD Bookstore, or at the Auditorium. The Sweets Mill String Band, a country folk quartet which has appeared in Eugene before, will be at the EMU ballroom at the University on Saturday at 8 p.m. The concert is sponsored by the ASUO Cultural Forum and the University Folk Music Club. Tickets are $1. The James Gang will appear at the Salem Armory Saturday night at 8 p.m. All tickets sell for $3.50 and can still be purchased at Crystalship. Power cut Sunday Electricity to several campus buildings, including all of the dormitories, will be cut-off Sunday morning for eight hours while the physical plant makes changes in power routing. Art Lund, co-ordinator of the physical plant, said the 6a.m. to 2 p.m. power cut will effect the Law Center, Villard, Deady, Lawrence, Allen, Emerald and Straub Halls, the science com plex, the Men’s Physical Education building, McArthur Court, and the dormitories. Lund said, “the purpose of the cutoff is to switch power to hook up some of the buildings with the Eugene Water and Electric Board system. The first amendment, to Ar ticle VII of the ASUO Con stitution, calls for re apportionment every two years of the 37 ASUO Senate seats. The seats are divided between four areas—Co-operative Housing, Fraternity and Sorority Houses! Dormitories, and Off-Campus! The second amendment to Article VIII of the Constitution, calls for one-third of these senators from the above four areas to be elected fall term, one third to be elected winter, and the final third and the ASUO president and vice president to be elected spring term. Both amendments passed under suspension of the rules. Committee members and chirmen were named for the Fiscal Affairs,Higher Education, Legal Affairs, Community Af fairs, Student-Faculty Liaison, Governing, and Public Relations Bureau Committees. Chairmen were as follows: Fiscal—Rolf Hage, Higher Ed.—David Litchman, Legal—Bob Winger, Community—Gordon King, Liaison—David Hytowitz, Governing—Fred Loveys, and PR—Don Brookhyser. The Senate will meet again next Thursday night. The Public Relations Bureau will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the EMU, Legal Affairs Committee will meet Monday night at 7 in the EMU. McGovern man slates discussion John Douglas, one of three co chairmen of the national “Citizens for McGovern” organization, will be in Eugene Saturday for a public discussion of the campaign. Douglas will speak at a 2 p.m. public meeting at Harris Hall, along with Blaine Whipple, chairman of Oregonians for McGovern. The session will consist of brief talks by Douglas and Whipple, followed by an open question and answer period. Douglas served as deputy U.S. attorney general under Robert Kennedy and was active in the 1968 presidential primary campaign of Kennedy. He is the son of former Illinois Senator Paul Douglas.
