Harvey to start game against ‘hooking Horns9 By PAUL BUKER Of The Emerald Oregon’s embattled Ducks left this morning for Austin and a date with the nationally third ranked Longhorns, sobered by the loss of Dan Fouts yet cer tainly not running scared. “(Harvey) Winn will be our starting quarterback” an nounced coach Jerry Frei just before the squad left for Longhorn country. The Saturday inter-sectional will be piped closed-circuit into Mac Court live and in color starting at 2 p.m. For a man about to enter one of the real snake-pits of collegiate football, Frei was exceedingly calm. “No, we really didn’t have to adjust our offense much for Harvey” said Frei in answer to a question. “He (Winn) did run the team well in that second half against Stanford—and his execution of our sprint-out play action pass is just as good or better than Dan’s.” Frei’s announcement ended a week of speculation as to whether Winn or untried Sophomore Norv Turner would get the Saturday call. But there really wasn’t much doubt. Winn’s game ex perience dictated the move, and he's certainly the most hard nosed 5-8 quarterback Oregon’s ever had. Besides, you just can’t stick an untried sophomore down on Austin’s Astro Turf, plug his ears so he can’t hear 70,000 Orange maniacs yelling “hook ’em Horns” and sit back to see what happens. Or can you? Sometimes sophomores do strange and wonderful things. Like Fouts against California when Tom Blanchard was hurt— and his subsequent performance^ against USC and Air Force." Everybody remembers what happened when a little-used quarterback came off the bench to beat the Ducks in Seattle. And what about Jim Kilmartin and what he did for Oregon State? The importance and magnitude of playing the Longhorns would indicate going with experience, however. And believe it or not, Winn will be able to look over somebody’s shoulders Satur day—at least if he ran across the sidelines and stood toe-and-toe with Texas’ Donny Wigginton he could. With star quarterback Eddie Phillips a serious question mark AT THE CO-OP ft THE EMU WHAT? (Duck Dope, of course) /\ for the Longhorns at press time, it looked like Wigginton would get the call. He’s 5-7 and 167 pounds, just a little wisp of a guy compared to Harvey’s 5-8 and burly 180. Wigginton played the entire game against Texas Tech last week and the Homs romped, 28-0. Except for Fouts and injured safety Bobby Green, the Ducks’ offensive and defensive lineups will be the same. Joining Winn in the backfield is fullback Jim Anderson and tailback Bobby Moore. Harvey will be pitching to Leland Glass, Chuck Bradley and Greg Specht. Bobby, of course, is the Pac-8’s leading grounder. He’s darted and dodged for 452 yards, a cool 150.7 per game average. Glass, after a solid performance against Stanford, held his league lead in receptions with 20 for every 207 yards. The Ducks’ big guns pose some big problems to Darrell Royal. Somewhat unsettling was the fact that Oregon ranked last in just about every defensive category, but there was no wholesale defensive shake-up in the offing for the Texas game. “What can you do?” asked Frei. “Basically we stopped Stanford’s option pretty effectively, but of course nobody runs it like Texas.” Unbeaten in 30 straight regular-season games, the Longhorns do more than just run wild. Every once in a while their offense goes run, run, run, pass. Or maybe even something like pass, run, run, run. It’s con fusing. “Texas is not a passing team” remarked Frei. “But they do like to throw the long ball once in a while—and many times they’ll do it on the first down. Against UCLA I think they threw it once and that was a touch down.” Frei was asked if the Longhorns might go to the air more after watching Don Bunce pass the Ducks’ silly with his long stuff. He smiled. “No. they’re a running team—that’s their strength—and I don’t think they would go away from that. They'll just keep coming at us with the option and we’ve got to stop it.” The Ducks, like Frei said, did look effective at times last week. But Stanford turned around and broke the big pass play when the ground game stalled. With Texas, the threat of the bomb is there— but Wigginton is no Bunce as a passer and the Longhorn receivers traditionally are nothing like a Miles Moore. The Longhorns don’t have a Cotton Speyrer this year. The key to the game, then, is obvious. Stop the wishbone, force the Longhorns into an air game they really don’t like, and hope like hell the offense can squeeze some points out of a swarming Texas defense. Giants clinch NL West title The San Francisco Giants clinched the National League West pennant, Thursday night, beating the San Diego Padres 5-1 in the final game of the regular season. Juan Marichal went the distance to post his 18th victory of the season. The Giants now face the Pitt sburgh Pirates in a two-out-of three playoff, for the National League title. The playoff begins Saturday in San Francisco. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers who were one game behind the Giants going into Thursday night’s games, beat the Houston Astros 2-1. The American League playoff also begins Saturday, with the Oakland Athletics playing the Baltimore Orioles in Baltimore.
