Sports Webfoot spikers challenge OSU By STAN ROTENBERG Of the Emerald Tomorrow afternoon at 1:15 p.m., the University of Oregon Ducks will meet the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis for a Pacific-8 dual track meet. This will mark the 68th meeting between these two schools, with the Ducks holding a 47-20 edge over the Beavers, including an Oregon 88-66 victory last year. If the Duck competitors per form at a par level, the meet will be somewhat of a rout as Oregon should push the century mark in scoring. If Oregon has an off day as a team, and OSU has an ex ceptionally good afternoon, Oregon won’t win by quite as many points. But the score really isn’t im portant, anyway. What will matter is the individual com petition, and there promises to be some excellent times and marks in this intra-state rivalry. In many events, the competition will be from only one team, like the Ducks win the mile and the Beavers in the triple jump, but in F encers slate meet Touche! Hie Oregon fencing team is hosting a tournament—the only home meet of the year— Saturday morning in Gerlinger Hall Room B54. The tournament is expected to draw 30 to 50 competitors, in cluding the outstanding in dividuals from the Oregon team. In other weekend club sprats action, the Duck lacrosse team travels to California to face two of the league’s toughest teams, Stanford and UCLA. And the Oregon crew is entered in the Corvallis regatta at Oregon State, one of the biggest meets of the season. All schools in the Northwest and northern California with crew programs are Expected to attend the tournament. Last weekend, the lacross team scored its fourth straight triumph by smashing Bishop Dagwell of Portland 13-1. The team is now 4-2 and is showing great im provement since dropping its openers to California. Ben Johnson highlighted the rout with three goals, while Tim Hopkins, Rich Kinney, Steve Ellis and Terry McBarneett scored twice each. The crew team finished fifth in a five-way meet, as Washington continued its dominance by winning in 6:06. The Ducks clocked 6:32. The bowling team took second place in the Pacific-8 Northern Division tournament behind Washington. But Oregon will represent the Northern Division in the Pac-8 championships May 15, because Washington lacks the funds to make the trip. One ot these close events is the 880-yard run where the Beavers 'Send Ron Borden and John Svoboda (both 1:51.3) against Oregon’s Nils Emilsson (1:51.1) and Dave Weicker (1:52.0). Weichker has just recovered from a prolonged illness and strength may prove to be a factor for him. On the other hand, Emilsson is very capable of dipping under the 1:50 mark at any time. The two-mile will highlight the Ducks’ Steve Prefontaine and Steve Savage running against OSU’s Keith Munson, but the only competition in this race will be for second and third place. Prefontaine has an 8:33.2, (NCAA record equalling time in the two mile this spring, while Savage and Munson have 8:50.2 and 8:52.6, respectively. Other top individuals in the meet will be Oregon’s premier shot putter, Pete Shmock, who has a season best of 61-3%; OSU’s triple jumper, Robert Reader, who was one of three people to break the Pac-8 triple jump record last week (Reado* jumped 52-11); Ivory Harris of Oregon with a 13.8high hurdle mark; and Bouncy Moore, the Duck school record holder in the long jump. As the entry chart below points out, this week’s meet will have the hammer throw instead of the steeplechase, which will benefit Oregon State by eight punts, assuming they win first and second place in the event. And that will be the key to Duck fortunes this weekend when Coach Mel Krause’s squad returns to Padfic-8 Conference action with a pair of doubleheaders at Howe Field. California meets the Ducks today at 1 p.m., then Stanford moves into Eugene Saturday for a 12 noon twinbill. Oregon, 4-6 in Pac-8 play, is looking for at least three wins to get back into the thick of the battle for the Northern Division title. But neither team is about to roll over and play dead. Stanford is battling UCLA for second place in the South and a trip to the post season Pac-8 playoffs, like the Ducks. Cal is 3-8 in league action, but is no “patsy.” Krause is quick to point that out. “Stanford is as capable as UCLA,” he says. “And Cal only lost to USC 2-1, after leading 1-0 going into the seventh.” Oregon is 16-13 on the season, but in recent games, the pitching has fallen completely apart—surrending 39 runs on 41 hits during the last three contests. Krause is throwing his two aces—Rick Mealey (3-2,2.34 ERA) and Alan Hardin (4-2, 2.55 ERA) against the Bears Friday. Lefty Steve Greenough (1-3, 5.02 ERA) and Andy Jones (4-1, 5.74 ERA) will work the Saturday doubleheader against the Indians. One of them will likely face Stanford’s Dan Shaw, an ex-Churchill High of Eugene star. “If we play as well as we’re capable of," says Krause, “and get the pitching I know we have, we’ll be in the ball games all the way."
