Roberts’ homers save Duck win over Linfield By JOHN ANDERSON Of the Emerald The Oregon ducks are for tunate Dave Roberts wields a big bat. Roberts’ second home run of the game—a two-run shot with two out in the last of the ninth— gave the Ducks an 11-10 win over visiting Linfield Wednesday at Howe Field, breaking a five game Oregon losing streak. But what happened before that was what disturbed Duck coach Mel Krause. Roberts hit a two-run first inning homer, helping his teammates to an early 6-0 lead over the Linfield second stringers, who were “just being given a chance to play,” ac cording to Linfield Coach Ad Rutschman. Then the Webfoots—especially the ones on the pitchers mound— sat back and watched 'as the Wildcats substituted some front liners into the lineup and raced to a 10-9 eighth inning advantage behind three homers. That marked the third com secutive game that the Duck pitching staff has surrendered at least 10 runs and 13 hits—the three-game total, in fact is 39 runs anti 41 hits. Linfield uses their second string for seven innings, and we have to fight for our lives with our first string.” growled a disgruntled Krause after the contest. “It looks like we have to score 15 runs to win a ball game.” The Ducks are now 46-13 on the season, and need to win just two more games to insure a winning record. All six remaining games are Pacific-8 encounters—home doubleheaders Friday and Saturday against California and Stanford, and a season-ending home-and-home pair with Oregon State the following weekend. Roberts’ one-out first inning homer, coming after an Earle Wicklund single, opened the gates for a big Duck first inning. Golfers set for defense Oregon’s golf team is favored to defend its title in the Eastern Washington Invitational today and Friday before finishing the final two rounds of the Northern Division Championships in Seattle on May 14 and 15. Senior Dave Glenz won the individual title last year in the Washington tourney and is the favorite again this year. Coach Jack Adler feels his team will put together a good effort and his squad of Glenz, Dave Miller, Doug Roxburgh, Don Smith, Craig Griswold and one yet to be named team member are coming off encouraging performance in the Northern Division Cham pionships. The Ducks will take a 13-stroke lead to Seattle next weekend and, according to Adler, will have to contend with Washington State for the team title. “Washington State has played surprisingly well, much better than I ex pected. I had suspected our lead over them would be comparable to our 30 stroke lead over Washington and Oregon State.” commented the Duck mentor. Also, a recent change in plans has moved the date of the Pacific 8 Championships forward to May 17 and 18 in Eugene. The Ducks will therefore have but one day’s rest before hosting the seven other conference schools. Four Wildcat errors, a hit batter and Greg Brosterhous’ single produced four more runs and a 6 0 Oregon lead. Steve Greenough, the Duck starter, gave up just one hit in three innings and looked very effective on the mound. But Krause plans to save Greenough for Saturday against Stanford, so he replaced him with Rick Haderer. And Haderer had his problems. The sophomore righthander gave up a run in the fourth on Tom Briggs’ double, two more in the fifth when Ron Webb and Briggs singled with two out, then three in the seventh on a home run by Mike Cahill. The Ducks, meanwhile, scrapped for a fifth inning run on triples by Mike Bubalo and Brosterhous. Then they improved a one-run edge to three when Gary Nall drew a bases loaded walk and Roberts was hit by a pitch to force home another run. But reliever Andy Jones couldn’t hang onto the 9-6 ad vantage. With one out in the eighth and Mike Maley on second via a double, he served up a home run ball to pinch-hitter Cary Clancy. Then Dan Waritz singled, and Webb powered a homer to the same place—deep left center—to send the Wildcats into a 10-9 lead. Bruce Maxwell, pinch-hitting for Jones, opened the Duck ninth with a sharp line single to left. Pinch-runner Mike Myers was forced at second by Wicklund, and Nall fanned. Then Roberts caught hold of a one-ball, two-strike pitch from Linfield reliever Spencer Wales and sent it high over the 360-foot mark in left field for his fifth circuit last of the season, and his third in as many games. All Krause could do was shake his head. “Maybe we’re lucky we’re not in the Northwest Conference,” he said.
