Pumpkin smasher free on $500 bail Former University student Francis Harris has been released on bail and her district court arraignment set for this Friday in connection with a pumpkin smashing at the University’s ROTC headquarters. Mrs. Harris, who was charged with defacing a building for allegedly smashing a pumpkin in the hallway of the ROTC building during an anti-war demon stration last Wednesday, was released on $500 bail. Her attorney was granted a five-day postponement on her arraignment in district court Friday to allow him time to familiarize himself with the case and to enter a plea. The charges were filed by Col. Elbert Curtis, head of the University’s military science department. Curtis said he was left with no choice other than to file a district court warrant in the matter, since Mrs. Harris, a non-student, was not liable under the student conduct code. Curtis has estimated that total damages during the demonstration to the ROTC building, including the pumpkin smashed on the rug, were in the neighborhood of $100. Grattan Kerans Russ Mustola Editor Business Manager Damages besides the smashed pumpkin included a spilled cup of coffee, which also stained the hallway rug, bums in the rug caused by cigarettes and chalked slogans of “OFF ROTC”, which were written on the inside walls of the building. It is unlikely that charges will be brought against students through the conduct code in connection with the incident according to Don McCarty, co ordinator of the student conduct program. McCarty said Friday that he was unable to determine whether damages were caused by students or non-students, so no charges would be brought forth.
