Ducks face WSU in Pullman hell-hole Don’t be fooled by a casual glance at the Pacific-8 Con ference basketball standings. True, the Oregon Ducks are undefeated in league play with a 2-0 mark, and a 9-2 record overall. True, Washington State and Washington, Oregon’s opponents on this weekend’s upcoming road trip, are both 0-2 in the Pac-8. But the losses for both the Washington clubs came at the hands of UCLA and USC, ranked numbers one and two in the nation according to UPI. And both teams are especially tough on their home courts. The Ducks, themselves the 15th-ranked team in the United States, will meet WSU (9-4) in Pullman at 8:00 Saturday night, then challenge Washington (5-7) Monday at 8 p.m. The extra day is allowed for travel. Love is the Pacific-8’s leading scorer with a 25.0 average, and is tied for the lead in rebounding at 13.5. Washington State is on the semester system, and campus will be half-empty with students going home for a week’s vacation following final exams last week. But notorious Bohler Gym nasium, capacity 5,000, will probably still seem to be bursting at the seams. That gymnasium, the one place in the conference where spec tators vociferously root against the visitors rather than for the home team, has been the major factor in the Cougars ability to run up amazing records at home. Oregon has already beat the Cougs once this year, 64-48, but that was at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum in the semifinal round of the Far West Classic. Two forwards, seniors Jim Meredith (6-7, 19.8) and Dennis Hogg (6-6, 17.7), pace WSU. They’ll also start sophomore Mike Dolven (6-9, 6.0) at center, and guards will be 6-0 Dan Steward (11.2) and 6-3 Mike Gomez (8.0). Frosh meet L & C in Friday test By JIM HUNTER Of the Emerald Coach Jim Dietz’s “seminars” on basketball net identification and appreciation must have been taken to heart by his Frosh cagers. The Ducklings are currently identifying the net at a rate of 102.2 points a game, giving Dietz no end to his appreciation. In explaining the reason for their scoring punch, Dietz stated “It’s that they really know where the basket is and they put the ball through it in a hurry.” More specifically, Dietz at tributed the Frosh’s average of 116 points a game for the last five games to the fast break. “Although we’re smaller than most other teams we just seem to get the rebounds.” More often than not, this precipitates the clearing of the ball to an open This weekend Swimming: Oregon State Senior Swimming Championships at Leighton Pool, beginning Sat. at 1 p.m. All Oregon swimmers 12 years of age or over are eligible to participate. Billy Ingram is leading the 8-1 Frosh in both scoring and rebounds with 25.6 and 16.7 a game, respectively. But while Dietz is pleased with the Frosh’s, he is displeased with the opposition’s point production. The Duckling’s fundamental defense should be enough to hold off the Lewis and Clark JV’s tonight in Portland, though Monday night could be another story. Monday, prior to the varsity game in Seattle, the Frosh meet a highly touted Washington Frosh team.
