The scoreboard at the close of the game provided a resounding “yes,” as the Webfoots avenged last season’s now infamous 60-13 loss to the Falcons with a 46-35 record breaking decision. Fouls breaks records The author of most of those records was Oregon’s sophomore—but by no means rookie—quarterback Dan Fouts. Fouts picked up eight school records; including single game records for most completions (28), most TD passes (4), most passing yardage (396), and season marks in offense. The Falcons jumped off to an early, but not too secure lead midway through the first period when QB Bob Parker hit flanker Ernie Jennings on the six as Jennings eluded Webfoot Bill Drake to pick up the touchdown. The Ducks came back with a 72 yard drive in 19 plays as fullback Jim Anderson finally found the hole going over for the score from the one. The crucial play in the series was a 17 yard pass from Fouts to end Bob Newland with fourth down and three on the Falcon 20 yard line. Half-way through the second quarter the Ducks picked up another seven points, this time going 69 yards in nine plays with Fouts hitting flanker Leland Glass in the left corner of the end zone for the score. Two series later the Falcons came back with tail-back Brian Bream bull-dozing his way in from the one. The key on this score was a pass interference call in the endzone that gave the Falcons the football on the one. Ace linebacker Tom Graham (named outstanding defensive player) came bursting through to block the Air Force extra point attempt—the score 14-13. Anderson fumbles Following the kick-off and a holding penalty the Ducks took over on their own 11, but not for long. Moore’s replacement Thurman Anderson fumbled and Falcon Eugene Oglivie dived on the ball at the 16. With another pass interference call bringing the ball down to the three it took only a couple more plays before the bulldozer Bream scored again. Parker’s point-after pass fell incomplete but the Air Force held a 19-14 lead. Oregon got the ball on their 24 with a 1:30 remaining in the half. With precision timing Quar terback Fouts five straight passes brought the ball down to the six. Fullback Jim Anderson then rambled over the right guard to the one. Fouts hit Newland in the endzone with seven seconds remaining. Fouts hit Newland on the one where he charged in for the 2 point conversion. At the half, 22 19 Oregon. On the first play of the second half Fouts threw a bomb to Glass, who made a diving catch on the Air Force 32. Six plays later Thurman Anderson eluded Falcon defenders to take a ten yard scoring strike from Fouts in the end zone. A 38 yard field goal by Craig Barry brought the Falcons within a touchdown, and they got that minutes later as Parker hit Jennings for the score. The key that gave the flyers the ball was a Fouts pass intended for tight end Greg Specht who found the ball bounce off him and into the arms of Falcon Darryl Haas. The final Air Force score came as the third quarter was coming to a close. Thurman Anderson fumbled to give the Falcons the ball on their own 44 yard line. Nine plays later Parker handed off to (you guessed it) bull dozer Bream who plowed in for his third TD of the game. A hobbled hike from center allowed Drake enought time to dive on the ball and thwart Air Force’s PAT. As the quarter ended, the Ducks were beginning their game winning drive. Starting on their own 21, Fouts alternated receivers as he guided the Webfoots to the two where Jim Anderson crashed over left tackle for six points and a tied game. Kicker Ken Woody booted the game winning point as the Ducks moved permanently into the lead 36-35 with 12:18 on the clock. Johnson recovery The Falcons looked as if they were again mounting a drive, until fullback Kevin Brenan fumbled and Oregon senior Mike Johnson recovered on the 40 of Air Force. Wasting no time, Fouts unloaded a bomb to Newland on the next play for the touchdown. Woody’s kick was good, and Oregon led 43-35. Unable to get it together on their next series the Falcons were forced to punt, and the badly kicked ball traveled only 12 yards and gave Oregon good field position once again. A couple of plays later Fouts tried a bomb to Specht but an alert Jim Smith picked it off in the end zone. Air Force drove to Oregon’s 42 before running out of gas, and on desparate fourth and five, Parker’s pass play to Jennings was broken up by Drake, Dave Pieper, and Fred Manuel. Staying on the ground, except for an important 18 yard pass play to Newland, the Ducks moved both the clock and up the field to where Woody hit on a 40 yard field goal with : 57 remaining. ^urc® Has Mere BOOTS Shown here... the "Hitchhiker" in golden tan glove leather with new broader toe and calf strap.
