Oregon Daily Emerald SPORTS EXTRA __University of Oregon, Eugene, Saturday, October 24, 1970 No. 35 Ducks, Trojans meet in nail-biter By RICK ROGOWAY Of the Emerald Pretenders will be separated from the Pac-8 preeminant this afternoon when Southern California’s guerilla army takes on Oregon’s air force beginning at 1:30. The Trojans, ranked 10th in the nation, claim a 2-1 conference mark and the Pac-8’s premier rushing and total offensive attack. Webfoot gridders are content with a 3-1 slate and the nation’s finest passing operation. Enough said about prospective game plans. Winner of this encounter can head for the showers hoping that UCLA upsets conference leader Stanford (3-0) tonight in Los Angeles. The loser can head for the showers and hope for gas. Ducks health Duck Coach Jerry Frei will field a healthy crew, sans injured quarterback Tom Blanchard. Trojan boss Johnny McKay, returning to his alma mater, will miss at least one defensive lineman, Tody Smith, and possibly Smith’s replacement, John Grant. It shapes up as an offensive battle but the war may be decided by defense. Oregon will be bolstered by the addition of defensive end Steve Buettner and monster back Fred Manuel, who have been sidelined by injuries. Led by linebacker Tom Graham and defensive end Ray Reeves, the Webfoots will be rubbing helmets with such runners as Clarence Davis, Sam Cunningham, Lou Harris and Rod McNeill, who have collectively paced the Trojans to an average of 287 rushing yards per game. Davis is the second leading rusher in the conference; between him and McNeill they have carried the ball 82 times without losing a yard. And with all that leg power, there IS a passer in the crowd. Junior Jimmy Jones has decent shots at USC pass completion and total of fense single season marks. Jones fourth in offense Jones is fourth in total offense in the Pac-8, producing 197 yards per tilt, while Davis ranks ninth. Troy’s major defensive weakness appears to be the secondary, described as slow and characterised by its ignorance of the short pass to protect against the bomb. If practice makes perfect, the Trojans should have a spotless secondary after today. The Duck offense is not passing fancy, it’s fancy passing. Often. Blanchard and sophomore sparkplug Dan Fouts have exercised their arms to the tune of 309 yards passing per game. Hie USC passing defense is only fifth in conference, allowing 202 yards per outing. Even though they possess the league’s interception leader, Ron Ayala with five, they should see their share of flying footballs. Fouts soloing Fouts will be soloing it today after completing 17 for 21 for 250 yards against hapless Idaho last week. He is now fourth of Oregon single season passing and total offense list, hitting on 91 of 165 passes for 1174 yards. They that pass need they that catch. And Fouts has that com modity in excess. Continued on next page Left tackle Mike Johnson (76) and left end Ray Reeves (99) raise hands and charge Idaho offensive line during football action Saturday against the Vandals. Johnson and Reeves will be keying on USC running backs in today’s crucial contest.
