Sports Long underwear never had it so bad By RICK ROGOWAY Emerald Sports Editor Do me a favor, would you?, if you ever see Jean Claude Killy, spit in his fanny warmer. You see, Jean Claude Killy knows how to ski, along with another hundred or so other people in this world, and I don’t. Of course, there’s a whole satchel full of things I don’t know how to do, but there is faith that someday I will learn and improve in certain endeavors. But I’ll bet you my last sitzmark that skiing won’t be one of them. You can lead Muhammed to the mountain, but it doesn’t mean he’ll ski there. They led me to the mountain, ana the mountain won—by a shutout. t I should have turned back when my comrades marked the ungodly hour of 6 a.m. as post time. I al ways thought 6 a.m. was like col lege student body presidents — everyone talks about it, but no body ever actually sees or wit nesses one. Alarm clocks don’t 4* even get up that early. Mine didn t, but unfortunately there was a skier in the crowd. So out of bed and into my favorite bit of ski attire — long, long^ed^et^Tnderwear^wIncfwnade me look like a dried up roote bega in heat. And on to Mt. Hood Meadows, where the scenic environment mask ed the dangers lurking ahead. Skis, poles and prayer book in hand, I stumbled to the dis-proving grounds—almost. Unfamiliar terrain intervened, in the mode of an incline which readily got the better of me, as I unwantingly slid into a sort of crevice which may as well have been Mt. Rushmore. Try I did to escape, and the harder I tried the more the gleeful audience increased. Funny thing about skiers, they all subscribe to the code that before they help you, the tears streaming down your cheeks have to freeze. Only then do they offer assistance, with that pert, “Oh, did you fall?” grin plastered on their face. „ . ... T , , So, that experience past, up the rope tow I glided until I reached the top and had to push off far enough so as not to construct a roadblock for the people behind me. I pushed, the gears slipped, and I started to slide into oncoming traffic. “Plant your downhill ski,” said she, and that is the first time I realized that not only could you ski with skis, but that you could cultivate with them also. Finally I reached the starting point for my sojourn down. My pseudo instructor showed me something called the ski-plow, saying, “If you master this you can ski on any hill.” He then whisked off, and before he reached his destination sprained his thumb. At that point, I knew I should have turned back. ^ . T So I ski-plowed. Unfortunately he didn’t tell me how to turn. I had to fall anytime I wanted to stop, or eliminate one of the three year olds who were by this time looking down at me as they schussed and wedled past on their skate-board sized skis with still another of those multitude of “Did you fall?” smiles. I felt like Truman Capote at a weight-lifter’s convention. . . . „ After a couple more misadventures, including the pain of having to watch a ski which I had just undone skip memly down the hill ridden by an invisible man, I returned to the crowded lodge. Three girls I had noticed sitting at a table at 10 a.m. were still there at 2:30 in the afternoon. Obviously they were waiting to make a snow Standine here now (you see, I still can’t sit down), the realization hits an "links in-that I just didn’t do justice to my long, red underwear.
