JVEBFOOT “SUPER-SOPH” Bobby Moore, shown here on a 19-yard touchdown run against San Jose State, is well on his way to becoming one of the all-time Oregon football greats. The talented first year slotback is tied for third in the nation in Photo by Dean Brickey scoring with eight touchdowns and a two-point conversion, and is tied with teammate Bob New land for the Pacific-8 pass reception lead. Moore has caught 18 passes in fur games, accounting for 287 yards and five TD’s. Ducks face Air Force; Hearn, Brauner return By STAN HORTON Emerald Sports Editor After facing four pass-oriented football teams on four succesive Saturdays, Oregon should be in line for a “breather.” But it just ain’t so. The Webfoots, hoping to get back on the winning trail after suffering a disappointing loss to San Jose State last weekend, take on the Air Force Academy, one of the top forward pass teams in the country, in a 12:30 p.m. (PDT) intersectional contest Sat urday in Colorado Springs, Colo rado. The Falcons, quarterbacked by 190-pound senior Gary Baxter, have relied heavily on an out standing aerial game while post ing a 2-2 record. Following an opening-season victory over Southern Methodist, Air Force was edged 19-17 by fifth-ranked Missouri and nicked 25-27 by 12th-rated Wyoming. The Falcons topped North Caro lina 20-10 last weekend. Baxter has done all the quar terbacking for Air Force during their first four contests, complet ing 73 of 152 passes for 1012 yards. His totals put him tenth in the country in total offense. The Falcon’s passing attack is augmented by a corps of fine re ceivers headed by Ernie Jennings Exclusive 1st Run! . .. hi nauy j ^ Metro Goldwyn-Mayer presents A Carlo Ponti Production starring David Hemmings Joanna Pettet Persons Under 18 Not Admitted Identification Required George Sanders-Dany Robin - Warren Mitchell original screenplay by Denis Norden produced by Philip Breen and Kurt Unger directed by Philip Seville Eastmancolor* ,.,OM - the FINE ARTS - THEATRE - ADULTS ONLY 650 Main SI., Ph. 747-2201 Hours Open 7:30. Longnecker, a 6-foot-4 end, broke five AF pass-catching records as a junior and is currently averaging 14.8 yards per reception this season. While Air Force is noted for a fine passing attack, Oregon’s aer ial offense is nothing to scoff at. The Ducks possess the second best passing quarterback in the conference and the two top re ceivers. Tom Blanchard is second only to Jim Plunkett among Pacific-8 quarterbacks in passing statistics. Blanchard, a redshirt last season, has completed 56 of 92 passes for a .609 percentage—the highest pass completion mark in Oregon history. Slotback Bobby Moore and split end Bob Newland are tied for the conference pass-catching lead with 18 receptions apiece. Both Duck centers Bob Hawk and Brad Halverson, are injured, leaving the job to sophomore Jim Figoni who played the last half of the San Jose State game. Kirk Hay and Steve Kantola will fill in for tight end Andy Maurer who hurt his knee last Saturday. Cam Sinclair, recover ing from cracked ribs suffered in the WSU game, would also ap pear to be out of Saturday’s con test. The return of Bill Brauner at safety could definitely bolster the Ducks’ pass defense which ranks next-to-last in the conference. Brauner, the six-foot junior who intercepted two passes against USC last year, has missed the first four contests because of a broken finger. Stan Hearn, the senior tailback who has seen limited action be cause of a calcimated hip, has been going full speed in prac tice, according to Duck head coach Jerry Frei, and should be ready to go Saturday. Frosh practice slow Injuries, inclement weather and a pilfering varsity have culminated to slow practice sessions for Oregon’s freshmen gridders as they await their season inaugural against a strong Oregon State squad Oct. 24 at Autzen Stadium. “Practice has been a little slow,” commented Duckling Coach John Marshall. “We’ve had a lot of injuries and the grounds have been sloppy most of the week. Besides that, we have to share some of our players with the varsity.” On the shelf until spring practice is Jerry Jackson, a highly-touted guard from South Salem, who underwent knee surgery Monday. Dave Rastovski is sidelined with a bruised shoulder, Ken Carter is out with a hurt knee, and John Dotson is hampered by a bruised sternum, while Jim Hartison and David Hyde are out with colds. All are expected back for the season opener. Marshall won’t name a starting lineup until next week. “With so much time (three weeks) between the opening of practice and our first game, they really haven’t had a chance to be “up” for any thing ... to show what they can do,” Marshall said.
