Weekend Preview Romeo & Juliet' on stage By CHRIS HOUGLUM Of the Emerald Word has it that Eugene’s recent accumulation of snow is melting off, renewing prospects for weekend entertainment as usual. But entertainment editors are a suspicious and skeptical lot and none too prone to run out the flag of Unbridled Opti mism. Last night’s observation of the dreaded Houglum’s Phen omenon, in which the planet Ju piter, in the ascendant, was seen to be in conjunction with a cloud bank, casts a pall upon our pre sent situation. This occur rence is by no means a miti gating circumstance. It is a bad omen. Still, weekend entertainment appears to be somewhat incon sistent in respect to this dire forecast. University Theatre’s production of “Romeo and Ju liet,” for instance, is the new est, and easily the most signifi cant, item on the agenda. The presentation, which be gins at 8 p.m. tonight on the UT main stage, represents a carefully edited and historically stylistic version of Shake speare’s tragedy. DeChaine has ex pressed the desire to keep the production as faithful as pos sible to the world of the 15th century Verona, Italy. A comparatively large cast of 25 is headed by Ben Masters and Elizabeth Lathram in the title roles. Supplementary ac tion is carried by Lou Salerni as Mercutio, Ed Chilla as Friar Laurence, Joel Morello as Par is, John Glassburner as Benvo lio, A1 Strobel as Tybalt, and Patricia Gibson as the Nurse. Performance dates are to night and Saturday, and Feb. 5, 6, 7, 8. Curtain time is 8 p.m. for all nights, and additional matinee performances (four were being planned last week) may be scheduled. Tickets go for $1.50 for Wednesdays and Thursdays, and $2 for Fridays and Saturdays. They can be reserved through the UT box office (except Sun days) from noon ot 5 p.m., and from noon to 9 p.m. on per formance dates. Grad students elect top officers Bob Rondstadt and Grant Watkinson were elected chair man and vice-chairman of the Graduate Student Council at its meeting last Thursday. Ronstadt is a master of arts candidate in International studies and economics. Watkin son, a doctoral candidate in fi nance and business environ ment, graduated from OSU in 1964. Ronstadt said he will support the work of the financial aids committee and the possibility of a union of graduate student em ployees at the University, sep aration of the GSC from the ASUO and integration of grad uate students on the curriculum committee. The GSC will poll the gradu ate student employees and hold a special meeting in two weeks to discuss the possibility of a union. A member of the state employees organization will be invited to the meeting. Coeds can sign up for informal rush Interested upperclass wom en may sign up for informal rush through today in the Of fice of Student Services, 207 Emerald Hall. The informal rush begins Tuesday and extends through Monday, Feb. 17. A rushee ori entation meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. this Monday in the EMU. Girls who rush during the two weeks are not obligated to pledge, nor to pay a fee. A fee of $8 will be charged only if the rushee decides to pledge.
