Campus Happenings Today THE MEANS by which con flict can be processed to pro duce community will be explored during the nine-week seminar, “Conflict and Community,” which opens at the University tonight. The seminar, sponsored by the Division of Continuing Education and the Eugene World Without War Council, will fo cus on the role of citizens in affecting policy. Lecturers will discuss the many faces of con flict—in interracial problems, in international affairs, in inter personal life and in public at titudes. Lectures of the semin ar will be held each Wednesday beginning today and continuing through March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in 214 Commonwealth. CONTEMPORARY FRENCH tapestries by Mathieu Mategot will be on exhibit at the Uni versity Museum of Art through Jan. 26. The tapestries are from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Hurschler of Pasadena, Calif. Matieu Mategot, although originally a theatre set design er and interior decorator, has de voted the last 20 years almost exclusively to designing over 400 tapestries, establishing his reputation as a leading artist in the medium. No experience is neces sary, but willingness and de pendability are vital. Proofreading involves work from 7 to 9 p.m. one night a week regularly. Writers should spend from 3 to 5:30 one after noon per week regularly in the office, and be on call for work any other time their schedules permit. Senator Wages Sales Tax Fight Sen. Vern Cook, Gresham, has called for the formation of a statewide organization to op pose adoption of Gov. Tom Mc Call’s Republican Sales Tax Plan. “McCall has made the most irresponsible, undemocratic and unpopular tax proposal ever made by a governor of Oregon,” said Cook. Cook explained, “the McCall referral proposal is irrespon sible because it is the duty of the members of the legislature to adopt a tax program, not pass the buck to the people. If the people like the tax program, they can let it stand. “If a substantial number of the people dislike the tax pro gram they can refer it and vote on it at the next following gen eral election . . . The only justi fication for a special tax election IF would oe an emergency that could not wait until the 1870 general election and no one has claimed that such an emergency exists,” he concluded. Cook has appealed to people opposing the sales tax, asking them to write to him in Gresham.
