'Earthquake' Disastrous for Ducks By STEVE SMITH Of the Emerald CORVALLIS (Special) — The earthquake which hit Parker Stadium in Corvallis Saturday may not have impressed many geologists, but Jerry Frei and the Fighting Ducks barely es caped the disaster with their proverbial feathers. The rumble was caused by Bill “Earthquake” Enyart, Ore gon State's bruising 236-pound fullback. Enyart, a prime can didate for All-American honors, blasted across the line 37 times for 168 yards, as the Beavers demolished Oregon 41-19. The 72nd renewal of the in terstate rivalry saw Oregon State capture the series lead for the first time since 1859. OSU now leads with 32 victor ies, 31 defeats and nine ties. Oregon has won only seven “Ci vil War” battles since 1931. For the Ducks, it was Enyart and the bad break which spell ed defeat. The first bad break of the game came when Oregon’s Clax ton Welch fumbled the opening kickoff and OSU recovered it on the 38. The Beavers took ad vantage of the situation as a 32-yard pass from Beaver quar terback Steve Preece to wing back Bill Main set the ball on Oregon’s two yard line. Enyart dove over left tackle on the next play to score his first of three touchdowns. The point af ter was good, and the Beavers led 7-0. Oregon fought back when, with 10:44 left in the second quarter, senior quarterback Eric Olson threw a 26-yard pass to end Greg Lindsey, who made a great catch at the OSU three yard line. Olson faked to the middle, then swept right end on the next play and dove into the end zone. Ken Woody’s kick tied the game. But Oregon State wasted no time, as Bill Main carried the ensuing kickoff a disheartening 94 yards for a touchdown. The kick failed, but the Beavers’ stunning return left the Ducks in a state of semi-shock. The Ducks could muster on ly three plays before Alan Pit caithley was forced to punt. Preece moved the Beavers down to the Oregon 12 with a 32-yard pass to Roger Cantlon. Enyart forced a big hole at left tackle on the next play and rambled across for the score. With the kick good. OSU held a 20-7 lead. Oregon was again unable to move the ball, and after Larry Rich returned a Pitcaithley punt to the Oregon State 46, Enyart sparked a drive culminated by a Main touchdown just as the gun sounded, ending the second quarter. The drive was aided by a pair of Oregon time outs, one with 35 seconds to go and the ball on the seven. After an Oregon drive was stopped at Oregon State’s three yard line early in the third quarter, Keith Sherman recover ed an OSU fumble on the Bea ver 22. Seven plays later, Olson tossed six yards to Roger Smith for the score. Oregon rooters, earlier resigned to a long after noon, came back to life. Hopes for an Oregon rally Pow! Zap! Sock! Oregon State was on the Frosh five yard line with fourth down and two yards to go when Kook quarterback Steve Endi cott handed off to the Rook’s version of Bill Enyart, Roger Smith. MAKE YOUR FUTURE OREGON'S FUTURE were squelched, however, in the fourth period, as OSU put the game out of reach with two more touchdowns, one coming on a 42-yard pass interception. With 14:06 left in the game, Craig Hannoman deflected an Olson pass, and middle line backer Mike Groff picked it off and rambled 44 yards into the end zone. Oregon State’s final score came with 4:10 left in the game after a bad punt by Pitcaithley left the Beavers on the OSU 49-yard line. A 26-yard pass by Preece to Cantlon on the Ore gon 10 set the stage for Enyart’s final score—his 17th touchdown of the year—on a push over right tackle from the one-yard line. Oregon’s only other score came on a 30-yard scoring pass to end Bob Newland in the end zone with 10:46 remaining. If tnere was a moment of glory for the Ducks, it came in the third quarter when defen sive tackle Jim Wathey deflect ed and intercepted a Preece pass at his own 26 to halt a drive. The interception was the 25th of the year for the Ducks, tying an all-time school record. Despite OSU’s dominance in the scoring column, statistically the Ducks fought on better than-even terms. Oregon man aged 20 first downs to OSU’s 19 and racked up 335 yards in total offense to the Beaver’s 302. The significant difference was in return yardage, where OSU gained some 92 yards, con sistently putting them in good field position after Duck punts. Enyart was named “Back of the Game” by press box vote, while teammate Mike Foote re ceived outstanding lineman hon ors. Both Enyart and Olson were named outstanding mem bers of their respective teams, and received trophies from the Oregon Wheat Growers Associa tion. The final score was the high est any Oregon State team had every scored against the Ducks. The previous best was in 1942 when the Beavers massacred Oregon, 39-2. There was more total scoring in Saturday's con test than in any previous Civil War battle. According to coach Jerry Frei, the Ducks played as well offensively as they had all year. But it was in trying to stop Enyart that the Ducks fell prey to the clutch passing of Preece. Though the senior quarterback connected on only four of 12 pass attempts, three of the com pletions set up eventual touch downs. “You can’t give away that much and still win a football game in this league,” Frei said, “Oregon State is a fine football team.” Oregon 0 7 6 6—19 Oregon State 7 20 0 14—41 OSU—Enyart 2 run (Rich kick).
