Why can t an idea be expressed in just plain English without play ing upon ones emotions. If the only way a person or group can gain attention to an idea, is by using obscene and vulgar devices, then I would question the value of the idea, for if an idea is worthwhile, it should be able to gain people’s attention and support without having to appeal to the emo tions. No, the restrictions of the legislature will not violate the true meaning of free speech and press. It will only ruffle the feathers of those who hide be hind the rights concerning free speech and press to see just how far they can go in saying or printing any and all licentious thoughts and pictures that enter into their mind. Marlene Peterson is a busi ness and finance major from Beaverton. The other four en tries are a Churchill High sen ior, a Lane Community College student, a Marist High senior, and a North Eugene High sen ior. The five entries bring the to tal to 15. The girls will be com peting for a $500 scholarship, additional prizes and awards worth $1,000 or more. Preliminary judging is set for late January or early February, with final judging in early April 1969. Entries to the contest are still being received at the Chamber of Commerce office in the Eu gene Hotel.
